Rasmussen are featured in the Sept. 1989 issue of Southwest Art. Rasmussen is best known for his commissioned works, the first of which were started in 1980 when he was chosen to create a series of public murals for the Salt Lake International Airport. Delicate by painting, is highlighted in the Arch, a Southwest Art article, as are Red Cliffs, a painting from the LDS Hospital collection and Zion Canyon, from the collection of the St. George Hilton Inn. Another painting featured in the Will South article is Kolob h oil Rasmussen painted for the h by Canyons, a new Student Center. The painting is the focal point for the sunlit cathedral-shape- d Kolob Living Room. Rasmussens early interests in science chronicles The magazine and art and the evolution of his tightly constructed artistic style through the study of traditional and nontraditional ways of interpreting the world about him. Rasmussens approach, South said, is to create an idealized landscape. The artist understands decay and rebirth and the essential impermanence of natural things, South explained, and he works to create a composite of different perspectives and different rock formations, and the palette is developed out of visual sensations collected over time and refined after long reflection. n The artist, educator and administrator was born and raised in Salt Lake City. He earned his bachelors degree in art at the University of Utah and returned to the university to earn his masters of fine arts degree after serving as an aviation flight crewman in the U.S. Coast Guard. Rasmussen spent 10 years, from 1974 to 1984, as a U of U faculty member and as the founding director of the BountifulDavis Art Center. He taught at Utah State University from 1984 to 1986 when he moved to Cedar City to accept the position as head of the SUSC art department. Rasmussen has completed another public mural, Temples and ' Towers of the Virgin, since joining the SUSC faculty. The canvas was commissioned by the massive, by four-foo- t, Zion Natural History Association and hangs in the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. Yet another panorama is featured in the lobby of the Cedar City Holiday Inn. While Rasmussens inspiration comes from nature, his approach varies between the abstract and the representational, the monumental and the infinitesimal. Just as nature embodies complex relationships on multiple levels or dimensions, so do my paintings of nature, he said. There are compositional, mathematical, philosophical and spiritual issues interacting as a whole. For me, nature is an endless source of inspiration and will continue to hold my attention.
