Baseball season leftovers haunt Saturdays rainy finale BY BRENT RICHEY All that remained were a few empty paper cups, and generic black and white, "Compliments of the half shells of cheap sunflower seeds strewn across the dugout floor. It had rained the night before and all day Saturday the last day and mud was caked to the dugout steps and hung in little clumps from the faded red benches. A silver SUSC jacket still hung from one of the hooks, and a ball, tattooed with the SU emblem, soaked up water between first base and the pitchers mound. These were the remnants of Southern Utah State Colleges final baseball game after the players had gone home to think about next year, and Coach Bill Groves prepared to walk to the opponents locker room to get some towels someone had forgotten to leave out for the other club. The rain, which had soaked the field and the 30 or so fans who had showed up to bid the Birds farewell, still fell in intermittent spurts, collecting on home plate and dripping from the dugout ceiling. A fitting way to end a season that, at the halfway mark, lost its significance for all but the ones who were there Saturday to experience the end. The Birds had closed the book with a doubleheader against the United States International University Gulls. SUSC won the first 5 in the final inning, but in the nightcap, with the bases loaded in the ninth, they couldnt score. 6 was the final. When the last ball was cracked for the third out, the three runners took off the red SU batting helmets with black electrical tape over the SU symbol and walked in to meet their teammates. Those in the dugout gathered up miscellaneous equipment and stuffed it into athletic bags and slid into the silver jackets. Groves trotted from the third base box and hustled his players together to shake hands with the Gulls. After the formalities, some swore, some just stamped their cleats against the cement to remove the mud. Others sat on the bench for the last time. Groves called his team together on the mound to r SU coaching career and quietly close his thank his players. They moved close together for a final cheer: Bye Birds. It wont for a long time. One at a time a few players straggled over to shake his hand and thank him for his dedication and the opportunity to play. justifications and apologies attempted to clear the air. The USIU van pulled into the empty parking lot and an assistant coach leaned out the window into the rain to tell Groves there werent any towels for his players. Groves told him he would go over himself. There was only one car in the lot when I went through the gate. Groves was still there.
