Show SU fullback Bird season Jim Andrus ends silently, symbolically is BY BRENT RICHEY tradition of The Thunderbird baseball came to a close Saturday, and the SUSC players and coaches showed their disapproval and 77-ye- disappointment by wearing black electrical tape over the SU label on the front of their hats. The players left the field after their final game slowly, but a few returned to thank the coaches for the opportunity to play. Saturdays double header with U.S. International began with a 5 win in dramatic fashion when Steve Hansen singled in two runs in the bottom of the seventh. The second game was played in a steady rain that ended in a heartbreaking 6 loss. The Birds had loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but couldnt score. The weathers fitting for the end of the season, said Head Coach Bill Groves. Now that the season is officially over, Groves said it hasnt dawned on him, and it wont for a wile. We battled all year long. (The team) fought every day and did everything I asked them. They have a lot of heart, he said. SUSC finishes the season with a 6 record, having lost 17 games by one run. The Birds split with the Gulls 6-- 7-- 23-3- 'Bird right fielder Tom Griffin rifled a throw to catcher Joey Sturges to tag out USIU's Barry Williams for the third out in the third inning of Fridays nightcap. Eric Godfrey then walked. Kyle DeLange hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Sonju and moving Godfrey to second. Tom Griffin singled Godfrey home with a hit to left. With the game tied at five, Gary Reese walked and went to second on a Joey Sturges sacrifice bunt. Reese scored the run when Tracy 5-- the game in the top of the ninth. USIU put two runners on with a single and a walk. Scott Coutts then stepped up and hit a double that scored both basemen. The memories will linger for a long time, Groves said. This was his fifth year as head coach. This program did something for this college. He explained the black tape as the players way of saying that SUSC had disappointed them. honored Jim Andrus, a graduating senior fullback at SUSC, has been named to the National GTE Academic Football First Team. The recognition came after Andrus was nominated by SUSC and then selected after screening by regional and national committees of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). That was probably the biggest honor for me in my college and playing career, said Andrus. To be able to combine playing with academics is the real goal because I always felt school was the most important. To be eligible for nomination a football player must have a cumulative grade point of at least 3.2 and be a starter or key reserve on the team. Andrus will graduate from SUSC with a degree in business administration next month. Prior to playing for the starter Thunderbirds, he was a two-yefor Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. As a Bird last year he was the teams second leading rusher with an average of over 67 yards per game. He topped the squad in yards per carry, showcasing a 5.8 average. Jim Andrus was an outstanding football player and student, said Jack Bishop, SUSC Head Football Coach. Hes the type of student athlete that coaches love to work with. ar 2ND ANNUAL CEDAR CIRCUIT HAIRITAGE HOUSE 118 N. 2ND S.
