SUSC remains the only four-yea- r institution in Utah without a formalized policy on what has become a continuing problem in the American workplace and in higher education, said Betty Kingsford, associate vice president for student services. Without the policy, SUSC lacks a systematic procedure for offenders, she said. Senators agreed on the need for such a document and began work on the problem last year. I feel a little naked without a document of this type in place, said Faculty Senate President Richard Kennedy. The proposed sexual harassment policy provides for informal processing of complaints. This provides the vehicle for informal resolution, said Kingsford. With the acceptance of the policy a Committee on Sexual Harassment will be instituted to include three faculty members recommended by the Faculty Senate, one administrative staff member, one classified staff member, and one student. The standing committee, an informal hearing body, will be qualified to investigate sexual harassment charges. The committee will research the validity of complaints before a formal hearing takes place. The informal process will eliminate 90 to 95 percent df the cases, said Kennedy. A sexual harassment policy offers protection for both faculty members and students, said Provost Terry Alger. Faculty members should use the same vehicle by immediately reporting to the recommended committee when propositioned for a grade, he said. Senators disagreed with the proposals constraint on faculty and staff members from amorous relationships with students, consentual or otherwise. Action will ba taken only if a formal complaint is registered. Complaints may not be registered by a third party, said Kingsford. WEVE COME A LONG WAY BABY!
