Schools attending the event with larger programs include Cornell University, University of California at Berkley and Bradley University. Im still on cloud nine, said Individual Events Coach Mark Morman, but I knew we could do it. Leading the team, junior communication major Peter Tagg swept many categories, placing third in Program Oral Interpretation, fourth in Informative Speaking and fifth in Humorous After Dinner Speaking. With his combined wins, Tagg placed fourth nationally, beating about 400 other competitors. Its been the highlight of my forensics 9 Cedar AM D) City LYNN G. Senior communication major John Vitullo also aided the team by breaking to the quarter finals round with his prose interpretation entitled Milk and a dramatic duo with Tagg from the play Nicholas Nickleby. Morman was extremely happy with the Debate team edged by Southern Utah State debaters recently returned from the National Cross Examination Debate Association Tournament at the University of South Carolina where they finished competition with the colleges best showing in several years. More than 200 teams from 112 colleges and universities in 39 states attended the tournament, making it the largest forensic tournament in the United States. SUSC is one of only 50 schools to have competed at the nationals for a fourth time, said Tom Murphy, SUSC forensics director. David Sproul, a sophomore from Frazier Park, Calif., and Melinda Riding, a junior from New Harmony, advanced to the elimination rounds in senior division, losing to a team from Kansas State round. The school must place in all 11 individual events at three tournaments to be selected. You have to win to get there, he said. There are very few numbers of speakers selected, he noted. When SUSCs name was announced as placing within the top ranking, Morman was ecstatic. "Never did I allow myself to dream we were in the top 10. I was so excited. It all came together in one fell swoop, he said. Assisting Morman in the coaching of the team is Dave Gaer and debate coach Tom Murphy. Morman described them as invaluable and very instrumental in what we did. K-Sta- te We had expected to make it to at least the quarters at the nationals. Although Sproul and Riding were eliminated before quarter rounds, Murphy remains optimistic. Im not disappointed with our performance, however. Advancing to elimination rounds at nationals would be equivalent to SUSCs basketball team making the NCAA tournament, he said. Freshmen J.P. Hendricks of Ogden and J.D. Long of Las Vegas, Nev., competed nationally in the novice division. Their strong showing most likely put them in the top 10 novice teams although awards were given only to the top five teams. Although they are a novice team, they have been competing in open division all year, winning close to 50 percent of their rounds, he said of Hendricks and Long.
