Planes taxi on and off the busy runways, and engines explode with thousands of tons of force to throw the mighty birds into the air. They seem to hover for an instant, defying gravity and the imagination at the same time, and then they are gone, slicing through thick afternoon air to reach some distant and almost inconceivable destination. For most of us, this scene is no more than an occasional trip to the airport or a compelling daydream while watching Top Gun for the 12th time on video. But for the Thunderbirds with adventure in the soul, now is the time to make this dream a reality, to do some real flying on their own. Thanks to a new class offered on campus at SUSC, aspiring pilots can take a giant step toward earning an operators license. According to Gordon Jewett, one of three team teachers for the course, the Private Pilot Ground School covers such aviation-relate- d topics as weather systems, navigation, aircraft systems, and Federal Air Regulations, as well as radio communications, chart reading, and use of the slide graphic computer. The three-credcourse is designed to aid students in preparation for the written aviation exam, which along with an oral test and a practical or flight exam is necessary to receive a pilot license from the Federal Aviation Administration. The teaching team for the new pilot class brings a wealth of experience to the classroom. Jewett is the manager of the local airport and Cedar City Air Service and has been a pilot for 25 years. Richard Payton and Darryl Christian are flight instructors at the Cedar City Airport and have e considerable and practical knowledge to offer the class. America has seen interest in air transportation expand dramatically in recent decades, but it air-tim- relatively few of her citizens actually learn to control a plane from the cockpit seat. According to Jewett, only 130,000 Americans hold private pilot licenses, making pilots an elite group. Most of these pilots come under the heading of general aviation, individuals who fly for business reasons. "There are many corporate pilots in the U.S., especially in the West with the great distances involved, said Jewett. I can fly to Phoenix in an hour and 15 minutes, and you know what kind of a drive that is. Jewett believes the pilot course is a unique opportunity for students to enter the field of aviation. With the necessary flight training, this Rather than dream of flying while watching the video Top Gun for the 12th time, SUSCs students may now prepare themselves for flight. class could open up a career with a major airline, Jewett said. The class is open to potential pilots of all ages; any person may take the FAA written exam, but an individual must be 16 years of age to earn a private pilots license. The private pilot ground school is in its second quarter at SUSC and plans are to continue the courses in the future. The class meets twice a week for three hours to better prepare students for the FAA test. The captain of the great vessel in the sky pauses a moment to thank the Maker for another safe trip, and then turns to home and memories, to thoughts of riding the clouds in a silver bird.
