Show THE THUNDERBIRD Drug-fre- e Beginning in fall , (CONTINUED contracts to be required students applying for Grants must that Pell FROM PAGE 1) theyll president for student services. Not only recipients of Pell Grants, but also students receiving federal aid through other programs will be affected by the anti-dru- g legislation. Other federal aid agencies may ask students to comply with the anti-dru- g legislation. People who receive other than Pell will have to sign other certifications, but I dont know for sure what the regulations are yet. It is possible that an additional certification will be signed to the effect that they have never been convicted of illegal trafficking, but Im not certain about that, said Michie. Those students v. ho choose not to sign the contract will endanger their grant money. I assume students will not be able to get aid if they don't sign, but penalties have not yet been defined, and the Department of Education is working this out at this point, said Michie. Neither SUSC official worries about students compliance with the law. It doesnt pose a problem. Students will just think of it as more government red tape. If they want to get aid, certify they say no the statement, said Church. Michie agreed, most students will treat it as a joke, and complain about having to sign the certifications. For those students unwilling to sign the contract, other sources of funding will be available. According to college officials, it is probable that federal loans will not be affected by the anti-drulegislation. Nothing specific has been said about loans just grant money from the government, said Eric Schmutz, loan collections manager for the college. The drug-fre- e legislation also affects SUSC, because it is a federally funded institution. The bill requires President Gerald R. Sherratt to certify that the college provides a drug-fre- e environment for those at the institution. As federal contractors, we stipulate that we provide a drug-fre- e workplace, said Michie. He added that alcohol and legal tobacco do not violate the act, and are not included. Specifics, regulations, and enforcement of the bill haven t yet been defined, but according to Michie, federal agencies are scrambling, trying to write up the regulations. sign SUSC MONDAY, MARCH 27, 1989 PAGE 9 ARNETTS GUN MACHINE WORKS Mechanical Design Prototyping and R&D Precision Machining New Product Development Custom Gun Building Gunsmithing and g , -- 4 x AU1 Repairs r 506-loo- s 1400 NORTH MAIN ANNOUNCEMENT!
