Show THE THUNDERBIRD SOUTHERN UTAH STATE COLLEGE, CEDAR CITY THURSDAY JANUARY PAGE 19, 1989 7 Richey rites BRENT RICHEY BY No worries, its Jan. 22 With Christmas barely a month behind us, sentiment and joviality have already resurfaced. There isnt even a holiday around the corner, but I think I know why. Its time for public relations executives to polish up their Its time for advertisers to shine their smiles. Its time for supermarkets to stock the beer and pretzels. Its time for the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is the perfect opportunity for a man to be a man. He can recline in his warped easy chair with his gut protruding from his shirt, and its OK. He can have a brew, even if he doesnt normally drink, drool on himself, and its OK. He can call his wife Sugar Lips, yell for more suds, and its OK. Its Jan. 22, San Francisco vs. Cincinnati, Miami, FL. This is the day when wives gather in groups of 10 or 12 (theres strength in numbers) to discuss the ridiculousness of men wearing hardhats and running into each other and then patting each other on the rear. Sound familiar? I have a few seasonal things to say. First, the game usually stinks and the television spectator either falls asleep or passes out sometime around the middle of the second quarter. The fun and excitement of the Super Bowl is not the game itself. Theyre boring. Ip fact, this year is a rematch of the 1982 matchup. The combined scores of Call it the bore bowl. The interesting the last five is 203-6thing is watching everyone make such a big deal about it. Second, its all a big mess. Too chaotic. It has to be. How can one fake 90 beefed up, injected up, drugged up players, a crew of officials, some 70,000 fans, 30 or 40 coaches, grounds crews, advertisers, businessmen, P.R. reps, ticket takers, janitors, water boys, vendors, scalpers, gophers, etc., put them together in one huge arena, call it a Super Bowl, and expect anything BUT chaos. Third, it is the biggest B.S. party of the year. I just cant seem to grasp why advertisers will pay $600,000 for 30 seconds of air time. I can only speak for myself, but as soon as the game fades to black and warns me a commercial is forthcoming, that is my cue to raid the kitchen, or torment the toilet. I couldnt name three commercials aired during the game. In fact, since I usually wake up in the middle of a rerun of a time slot filler, I have to watch the news to find out who won. This year those of us too poor or too smart to fly south and migrate to Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, Cuba, can feel secure. This year is the first time in Super Bowl history that the host citys downtown buildings will be lit up. What an occasion. What splendor. To them I give a convivial whoopee. Trying to confuse visitors stereotypes, officials have attempted to bring a new air to their city. Miami Vice, they have instead chosen to focus on the sweeter side of Miami Miami Nice. One official said they have taken great measures to encourage the proper attitude from the people of Miami. He said they want to show courtesy to the guests, and the pride they have in their city. The host committee has confronted every civic organization in Miami, 46 chambers of commerce, the convention bureau, and minority businesses to ask for their cooperation. The committee said it was frightened by the tremendous cooperation they received. Does wonders for confidence. Im a football fan, and Ill watch the Super Bowl, Bore Bowl, or whatever you want to call it simply out of respect shuck-and-jiv- e. 5. At' ' ucey French chipped in 10 points in lust night L'.
