Show THE THUNDERBIRD Intramurals offer more than just athletics BY NEIL COSLIN College students across America are looking for a way to enjoy themselves, and at SUSC Daren Estes has found a solution "Intramural sports are for everyone," said Estes "A person doesn't even have to be athletic in order to enjoy the things we offer "We want people to feel comfortable with sports," he continued "Even though they may not be great athletes, there is no reason for them not to be outgoing " According to Estes there was a personal conflict between last year's director, Kevin Howard, and himself "Some of the sports were severely damaged from within due to Howard's inability to deal with student suggestions," said Estes, who refuses to make the same mistakes He also plans to add new and innovative sports to the intramural schedule Expected is a continuation on the seasonal sports, such as football, basketball and baseball Some new ideas include water polo and trap shooting "Sporting activities are supposed to be enjoyable," said Estes "I'm here to do the best that possibly can to improve the current program and boost school spirit " Estes encourages student suggestions and is always open to new and refreshing ideas To encourage participation, Estes is offering prizes each quarter for the winning teams. "We will have a running score card," he said "Teams will have their scores kept up to date on our bulletin board in the new student center " A class will be offered for those interested in taking a more active part in the intramural program The class deals with the planning and overseeing of each sport Class members will be allowed to participate with an assistant Furthermore, paying positions are available for those interested For more information contact Estes at I 586-776- Golf swings into season Tom Kingsford's 1988 BY BRENT RICHEY 9. y-- xvwon xf y - - percent of the student-athleteon the 1988 Thunderbird football squad have a grade point average of 3 10 or better Twenty-tw- o s Cross country hosts the annual SUSC Invitational Oct 8 The first game at home pre-seas- is 'Bird baseball 13 at 2 p m Oct Waukeenyan tryouts are Oct 4 at p m in the dance lab of the Physical Education Building 2 r 17 PACE The Lady 'Bird volleyballers begin their first home stand of the season Oct 15 when they host Mesa something I can count on.99 I For a golf team that has traditionally been matched against such powerhouses as BYU, and Wyoming, the transition to Division golf competition would probably elicit no more than a yawn from Coach Tom Kingsford, as the team already competes against several Division schools Kingsford expects great things from his squad of seven, four of whom are freshmen, in spite of an intimidating schedule that includes Wyoming, Boise State, and Air Force Nevertheless, it isn't that the competition is overwhelming, "It's just that we have better people to play the schedule," said Kingsford Even though Kingsford has such a talented group of golfers, he did not do any recruiting "Golf is a secondary sport at SUSC. There's not enough scholarship money to bring in lots of the talent that would normally go to the larger schools," he said Kingsford is happy with his role, he said, and sees a lot of promise in the team "They will blossom It's because of the positive attitude we have," he said Kingsford uses a system of internal competition to strengthen his team, both mechanically and mentally. The 'Birds have competed in three tournaments so far this season They took seventh place at the Fort Lewis tourney with Will Healy qualifying eighth, and September 17 the team traveled to Fox Acres in Colorado and finished fourth with two medalists Wade Olsen, fourth; and Todd Mills, sixth Sept. 30 the team traveled to Colorado Springs to play in the Falcon Invitational 3, dont want a lot of hype.
