Show rcn 11 ii r mrf Kv-"ia- THE THUNDERBIRD THURSDAY GRANNY'S rrra New theatre to feature large painting by SUSC artist, teacher Mark Bangerter here he w as standing, his heighth led the eye out of the painting. The students who posed in the Tanner painting were: Gibson, Julianne Crofts, Jeneane Gallo, Tobin Atkinson, Allan Neves, and staff member Tw lla Small They created a w all of Shakespearean actors as the painting began to take shape on the canv as. Bangerter sought to capture Graces regalitv and Oberts naturalness. The dark colors make Grace and Obert stand out, the reds and deep purples tend to he thcatn al Its a bit darker than I usually paint, Bangerter said Grai e is sitting upright in the painting and her expression portravs that regality w hich the artist sought to capture Oberts tie is slightly crooked to show a natural attitude and the actors behind him create a more humanistic line, says Bangerter Obert refused to v lew the painting until it w as near completion because he didnt w ant his opinion and comments to change the portrait, he says. "But w hen he finally looked at it his first comment w'as My ties crooked. hen I explained it w as to show him as natural, he liked the idea, says Bangerter. When Tanner commented that he thought the final result was more than a portrait but a painting Bangerter took 't as the highest compliment. Currently the painting waits in the artists studio for the completion of its future home w Some people have a love which becomes immortalized Such is the love of Obert Tanner a love for Shakespeare which has compelled him to donate money for the furthering of SUSCs theatre arts, most recently for the Randall L. Jones Memorial Theati e, now taking shape across the street from the Auditorium Tanners love for Shakespeare, although a daily part of his life now , w ill live beyond him in the immortalization of a painting si feet high and over four feet wide. This painting w ill be housed m a room in the future theatre building, a room specifically designed for the painting The painting, commissioned by Fred Adams, theatre arts professor, was presented as a "very open commission to Mark Bangerter, associate professor of the art department. The portrait guideline w as very open, Bangerter explains, which 1 was really excited about. ed Bangerter tried to approach the painting w ithout any preconceiv ideas of the well known and prestigious man, the founder and ow ner of the most successful jewelry outlet in the region I met them in Salt Lake I City as they are and slowly conceived the idea for my painting as got to know them, he says. Both Tanner and Adams approved of the idea which became Bangerters painting a work designed around Grace and Obert Tanner with Shakespearean characters surrounding them. Afterall, the environment is Shakespeare, Bangerter says When he met Obert and his wife, Grace, Bangerter found his love for Shakespeare one of the dominating qualities. But a more admirable quality was the Tanners humanness, says Bangerter He and Grace are At first 1 felt very comfortable people very human, he . intimidated but Im comfortable with them now Grace talked about her close friends rather than herself. One of her friends she talked about w as Eleanor Roosevelt. Neither of them, despite their social standing, had a stuffy or superior air, he says. Obert has a sensitivity tow ard the arts. Obert and Grace Tanner are among the most ardent of Shakespearean lovers, and theyll be remembered always at SUSC , thanks to Fred Adams and Mark Bangerter. The sittings with the Tanners lasted several months, although the complete process including the thought process took over a year A typical day for Bangerter began at 9 a m. in the Tanner home. Obert had risen at 5 a.m. and gone to w'ork until noon. The sittings w ould take place in the afternoons when Obert returned home Meanwhile, Bangerter would have tea and lunch w ith Grace. The sittings took place in their parlor where Bangerter put his easel next to their gi and piano The Tanners worked long, hard hours doing the sittings Obert stated e jximtcd that he believes in getting a project done, says Bangerter until Christmas was over and sometimes had students come o er to their home to sit, he says. The Tanners were verv gracious with their time Bangerter caught the naturalness between Grace and Obert in his It show s their tie w it h eac h painting by portraying them holding hands other, he says. Bangerter also painted w hat w as once tw o c hairs into one in order to bring the Tanners closer. Not all in the painting is true-t- lift- although the o crall image- has lifes gutsiness. For example, Bangerter painted one of the Shakespearean actors taller to create a better composition for the eve "1 painted Todd Gibson out and painted him back taller, explains Bangerter, because - - BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE CHIMICHANGA AND A MEDIUM DRINK Obeit and Gi ace Tanner s portrait uill occupy a room in the Randall L Jones Klcmonal Thcatie Building The painting by to Mark Bangerter (pictured) includes six students from the theatre arts department (right to left) Todd Gibson, Julianne C tofts, Jeneane Gallo, Tobin Atkinson, Allan Neves and former Shakespearean Festnal secretaiy Twila Small lacoTime 830 SOUTH MAIN SATURDAY On ALL FOOD ITEMS MONDAY NIGHT FROM 5 TO 8 HALF PRICE MATINEE MOVIE WITH THIS VALUABLE COUPON 765 EAST 700 SOUTH 514 NORTH BLUFF 669 SOUTH MAIN 628-400- 7 628-547- 7 586-433- 8 ST.
