Jones, and David Gardner received gold medals at the National Leadership Conference of Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) competing in the United States Skill Olympics (USSO) last month. Out of the 275,000 members representing 14,000 VICA clubs throughout the country, 2,500 were handpicked from previous state competitions to represent their schools at the (USSO) held in Wichita, Kansas. The vocational Olympians contended in 38 occupational and leadership skill areas in which the winners received gold, silver and bronze medallions as symbols of their achievement. Out of the 38 gold medals given in the national-leve- l competition Jones grabbed one the Job Skill Demonstration category by explaining in five to seven minutes to judges on how to set a stone inside of a ring. Jones, originally from Chambersburg, Pa., traveled 2700 miles to attend SUSC said, and am very proud and pleased to represent this school in national competition. Gardner, who won a gold medal last year at the USSO, picked up his second gold medal in the eight hour Graphic Communications competition in which he competed in six different categories: plate making, layout and design, stripping of negatives, typesetting, press operations,- and a written test. Gardner, a junior from Cedar City, said, The pressure was up this year because wanted to do better than did last year, felt relieved after finding out that had won the gold medal, he said. in I I - I I I I Braithwaite Gallery shows area artistry The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery is now exhibiting the works of more than 40 artists at the Annual Southern Utah Artist Invitational July 16 in the Old Administration Building at Southern Utah State. The exhibit displays over 90 works of art including oil paintings, water colors, cyramics and bronze sculptures, weaving, wood carving, phototgraphes and fabric applique. One of the Gallerys most popular shows, the exhibit will feature such artist as painter and water colorist Glen Dale Anderson, water colorist Lynn Berryhill, painter Jim Jones, and ceramists Glen Blakely, Mark Talbert and Joseph Bennion. All of the artist are excellant at what they do, and the exhibits is designed to show a wide variety of subject matter and styles, said LaRae King, gallery curator. Our Southern Utah Artists are rapidly growing in number with new artists moving into the Southern Utah area for its varieties of aesthetic influence, King said. The artists hail from towns and cities across southern Utah, including Moab, St. George, Boulder, Pine Valley, Cedar City, Toquerville, Teasdale, Spring City, Springdale, Santa Clara, Parowan, Hurricane and Mt. Carmel. Sorenson, Vlasich sot for Convo Robert E. Sorenson, a professor and head of the department of health, physical education and recreation at Utah State University, will be the July 23 speaker for the Summer Lecture Series, followed by SUSC history professor James A.
