Show THE THUNDERBIRD Knock, knock.. .who's there? Ye Gods. This is it. The big one: Graduation. After seven years, I'm finally getting out of this place. don't think my mind has yet fully registered the implications of this fact. The Real World (hateful phrase makes it sound like all of these past years have been unreal and God knows, some have them have been all too real but the cliche sticks so I'll use it) has at last come knocking at my door. Part of me hears It knocking and wants to go answer, to swing the door wide and let what happens happen. Another part of me is still pretending to be asleep, mumbling, "Go away. I'm not ready to talk to you yet. I'm not dressed. Come back tomorrow." But, like a good Fuller Brush salesman, the Real World is a persistent bugger. Unlike the Fuller Brush salesman, however, It never tires of knocking, and It never goes away. This is one of the things my active mind is telling me. Unbidden, it begins to tell me other things as the knocking of the Real World continues.... If you choose not to answer the door right away, the Real World will set up camp outside, taunting you with the bargains you are missing, and effectively trapping you in your dusty old house until your money and food vanish and you have no choice but to open the door and face It. There is a danger in this. If you delay your meeting with the Real World, you may have to face It on Its own terms. And the terms are not often the best. You might be able to bargain with It to improve your lot but at what cost. The Real World demands some serious sacrifices from latecomers. Still, at this stage, it is not too late to salvage some dreams and ideals and build from them a life that suits you. This will not be the case if you wait too long. Eventually the Real World will grow tired of waiting for you to surrender (even conditionally) and It will come and GET you. Too late now for bargaining you must take what It gives you, if anything, and damn your dreams. You're screwed and in most instances you're the one who twisted the screwdriver, turn by turn, year by year. You have been the builder of your own destiny thus far, but at this point your destiny has been handed over to someone else. This is why you stayed in school: Not to learn about the past or the present, or how to spell and speak properly, or how to do math or any of those other academic disciplines. No. These things are important, vital even, but they are worthless without the real lesson that an education should give you and that is to teach you to think independently. To find out what is not known rather than to memorize what is already known, and to learn how to use whatever tools you have been given to try to build your own destiny rather than have it built for you by an impartial and hasty contractor. So, you bonehead, get yer butt outta bed and go answer the door before the Real World gets mad and kicks it in. I This is the lecture that I've been hearing in my head and trying to ignore for quite some time. Now, with graduation looming ominously on the horizon, can no longer ignore it, and am not sure want to certainly can't afford to. Ignoring that lecturing voice now would be like ignoring the rest of my life. stint at SUSC taught me better Sorry. No can do. My seven-yea- r than that. guess that I'd better go answer the door now and meet the Real World; maybe offer it a cup of coffee. don't want it falling asleep on me. Well, guess that about wraps it up. Much thanks to those who made my stay here tolerable, and to those who made the Cachectic Observatory what it was, and still is. You know who you are, hope. Good luck to all of you. P.S. To those who've wondered: "Cachectic" comes from the noun "cachexia," meaning a degeneration of the physical and mental being, usually associated with disease.
