Show THE THUNDERBIRD S v" L In response to last week's Access article "Research is Costly and Inhumane," by Julie Sacos, would like to express another view. First of all, don't believe in torturing animals, but do believe that scientific research is both just and humane. feel last week's article was a good example of propaganda, exaggerating many aspects and deleting many more. To begin with, laboratory animals are bred for scientific research, they would not be alive if it weren't for the scientist. Since most lab animals are either mice or rats, would I I I I I anyone who supports this group allows mice and rats to run freely through their house because the traps and poisons made to exterminate these pests rarely kill instantly. This means that the animal would suffer. The Access neglected to point out that in most cases animals are unconscious during a vivisection. Therefore, the animal doesn't feel anything. Also, find it interesting that the animals used by animals' rights groups for their examples are generally ones that people find dear to them such as dogs, cats, monkeys, and pigs. think the main problem with the views of people in these organizations is that they tend to I I give human feelings and emotions to animals which are incapable of them. The reason we humans are as intelligent as we are is that we have a large brain to body ratio. We have more brain than it takes justified to survive, so the excess is used for problem solving or thinking. Most other animals lack this excess. For example, baboons are captured by making a hole in a termite mound just large enough for their extended hand to enter. When a baboon reaches in and grabs some food it finds that its fist is too large to remove from the hole. The baboon is not intelligent enough to drop the food and is caught. The point is that laboratory animals FREE EXTRACTING THROUGH APRIL 25TH. OFFER GOOD UNTIL 412587. By saying that you will give a voice to those without one, you are also giving thoughts to animals that could never think them. And by this you doing would be imposing rights on animals that can not uphold them and thus do not deserve them. suggest to anyone who considers joining an animal rights organization to first learn more about the animals in question. Then, keep in mind that most of the information given by the organizaiton is biased so that only their point is understood. Just as last week's article was biased and suspect the movie, The Hidden Crime is also somewhat biased. Beware that being an extremist, for any cause, can be detrimental. Finally, consider the effects which would I I come about if you should succeed. I, for one, would hate to have a doctor try to give me an unproven drug or treatment.
