CONNELL "The start is the thing that gets you. The race really begins in the minutes just before you reach the starting buoy." With a perceptive eye, Dennis Connor, skipper of the America's Cup champion Stars and Stripes, accentuated the importance of the race's start. Indeed, in these past weeks the forming political parties at SUSC have resembled the great yachts of the America's Cup jostling and manuveuring for a favorable start. Wednesday in the Great Hall the starting line was reached and crossed by three political parties that will vie for control of the governing apparatus of the Associated Students of Southern Utah State College. To the chorus of enthusiastic cheers of party faithful, the Red Party, SUSC Party, and the Vox Populi Party nominated some 45 hopeful candidates for student body office. Election officials were pleased with both the amount of candidates nominated for office and the diversity that they represent. This point was brought home by Election Committee Chairwoman Alice Butler as she reflected on the field of candidates: "I really feel good about the three full party tickets. It will bring a great deal of diversity of students and student opinion to the elections. am looking forward to a great election." Business, Communication and Technology Senator Monica Moe, candidate for ASSUSC President heading up the Vox Populi Party, saw her party faring "strongly" in the upcoming elections due to its broad appeal to all students. "We named our party The Voice of the People because we wanted to represent all students," said Moe. The Voice of the People will field a full slate of candidates that include theatre arts major Jeff Ingman for academic vice president and Brad Giles, ASSUSC assistant director of the United Arts Council for administrative vice president. In the Senate Vox Populi will list Reagan Wood, Helen Tucker, and Charles Kirk Smith for the School of Business, Communication, and Technology; Loeman Church, Michael Bahr, and Keith Betsuie in the School I LADY 'BIRD CAGERS HEAD TO COLORADO FOR DISTRICT PLAYOFFS. The SUSC Party keynote was sounded by party leader and presidential candidate Daril Magleby as a "...a call for all SUSC students to come together to further the cause of SUSC." Magleby further called for "openmindedness" in ASSUSC and believes that the SUSC Party will bring that element to governing. The SUSC Party candidates that join Magleby are Tad Brinkerhoff for administrative vice president and K.C. Jones for academic vice president. Both echo Magleby's call for a united student body and the importance of communicating with students. In the Senate, the SUSC Party fields Dorcas Adams, Susan Francis, and Kristen Robertson for the School of Arts and Letters; Susan Topham, Audra Kasparian, and Alemo Teo from the School of Education; from the School of Science are Marni Madsen, Craig Wyatt, and Stacey Stewart; and candidates for the ASSUSC Senate from the School of Business, Communication and Technology are Cindy Andreason, Boyd Christensen, and John Lowes. ASSUSC Administrative Vice President Mike Anderson mounts his campaign for ASSUSC president from the top of the Red Party. Anderson stresses student finances in the Red Party campaign listing student concerns about fee increases, budget cuts, and the way student money is spent as central issues in the Red Party campaign. Anderson believes that the Wednesday primaries bode well for his party due to its student oriented platform and campaign. Candidates for the remaining two executive offices running under the Red Party banner are ASSUSC Science Senator Dane Boren running for academic vice president and LDSSA Vice President Stacy Buchanan for administrative vice president.
