Show THETHUNDERBIRD MONDAY FEBRUARY 2, 1987 PAGE Student fee increase proposed for '87-8- 8 BY GARN $ $ 4 v X BY V 1 'k As budget cuts have taken their toll on the college, student affairs administrators and ASSUSC have proposed a new round of student fee hikes that will go into effect in the fall of 1987. This latest fee hike will be $30 per year and will raise the already existing student fees from $234 to $264 per year. Proponents of the measure claim that the hikes are justified in order to make up for shortfalls in certain areas that have been hard hit by budget cuts. This $10 per quarter hike will break down and be spent in the following areas $4 per quarter toward the new student center expected- to be completed in a year, $2.50 per quarter student health fee to make up for a $17,500 cut made in the student health budget, $3 per quarter athletic fee to replace a $13,000 cut in the general athletic fund and to also create a $10,000 fund to compensate for increased travel expenses and game guarantees, and a 50 cent per quarter fee for the theatre department so that students will no longer have to pay to attend SUSC theatre productions. - School officials maintain that the rate hikes are not all that exorbitant when one compares the fee payments at the other four year colleges in the state; fees at the University of Utah are $299, at USU $270 and at Weber State $246 According to Sterling R. Church, SUSC vice president for student services, he has received the most flak over the proposed hikes for the athletic department But he maintains that, "The athletic program is an image building campaign for the college and each time we receive sports coverage, we let people know that we are a four-yecollege and our image is enhanced " Each of the proposed hikes, Church said, "will immediately benefit the programs involved and the students directly." ASSUSC President Alan Bailey said that because the fee increase will affect all SUSC students, he has recommended that concerned students attend an open forum to be held on Wed. Feb 4, at noon in the Thorley Recital Hall The purpose of the forum will be to address student questions about the fee increases and allow them to give their input on the issue. ar Former SUSC football star Juan Henderson won Mr. scepter in the form of a rusty tire iron MINDY HUNT Juan Henderson, a physical education major, won the title of Mr. SUSC 1987 Monday night at a pageant held in Thorley Recital Hall An overflow crowd saw additional chairs added and many attendees sitting on the floor and standing in the doorway.
