SUSC Softball Coach Joy Peterson whos had some good teams in the past expects her 1986 squad to do well, too. It probably wont be too tough, however, to improve on last years mark of Well be about 100 percent better, Peterson said. The Ladies open against the University of Utah in Las Vegas March 7. The tournament includes UNLV, University of South Florida, Oklahoma City University, Cal. State Fullerton, and Fresno State all NCAA Division 1 schools. Well take some lumps, Peterson said Especially since we have a lot of coming together to do. The whole schedule will be tougher than other years but Peterson thinks that her players will be able to handle it. Its not going to be easy, but the kids are working hard to be ready, Peterson added. had a young The team last year according to Peterson. This year we have much more experience, good people coming back, improved pitching, and a group of freshman players who have played a high caliber of softball. Three of the potential infielders are on the womens basketball team now in postseason play. Denise Muir, Kim Free and Staci Sargent all expect to see some playing time for the Lady Birds in 86. The warm weather helps with the beginning of the season. Peterson said it helps the players to face real situations. The pitchers face a change from throwing in the gym and on the mound outside. The ball acts different outside, she said. I really think that we have the caliber of players that we can be a solid, complete team once we fit everyone in the positions that will most benefit the squad most, Peterson said. Pitching is looking better with the addition of transfer Jill alle Jacobson. She is a conference and team MVP from Scottsdale Community College. Freshman Kaylyn Sonnenberg, along with returning Donna Pay will make up the balance of the mound staff. Jacobson has a good variety of pitches and a competitive two-tim- attitude. Her speed is good, and the ball moves for her, according to Peterson. Sonnenberg is a good athlete who works hard and has shown real improvement during the winter. Pay pitched last year and should be stronger after a year of experience. Newcomers Nan Spiers and Carrie Stelter should make the catching position very strong. e Spiers is a and player from Snow College. Stelter is a freshman from Salt Lake. Both of these people played m very strong summer leagues. Spiers has experienced two national tournaments, and Stelter has been involved in with age group teams which have competed on a national level, Peterson said. Peterson is pleased with her infield prospects. We probably have seven people with experience at shortstop. Obviously, well have to do some position switching, but the talent is there for a very good infield, she points out. and Muir, an player for the Lady Birds last year, was the 1985 shortstop. She will undoubtedly play somewhere in the infield this season, and she is the at short. current most-likel- y Other infield prospects include Free, Sargent, returning letter winners Mary Lynn Thornton and Regina Pelto. Two returning starters, a freshman and a transfer are the likely regulars in the outfield. Seniors Jana Crawford and Mendee Syme are both excellent outfielders, according to Peterson. Freshman Sondra Reese and junior Karen Talbot, look like they could get plenty of playing time. Talbot, all- - conference and at Snow last year, has excellent speed. A number of other players including Stelter, Spiers and Pelto are still in the outfield picture. Outfield prospects are very good, Peterson said. We have excellent sneed and strong arms. Tha area should be very solid. The Ladies begin at home against the Mesa Mavericks on March 21. Fridays games start at 1 p.m and Saturdays double header starts at noon. two-tim- |
