Show The Tfiundier6inf Ramsey plays like the vet she is BY DAVE BURNS One day a boy was practicing basketball at a nearby playground. He may even have been fantasizing that he was playing for the Los Angeles Lakers in the person of Jerry West. But on this day he had a visitor who wanted to shoot around with him. It was a girl around the same age. Usually girls at this age want to play hopscotch or house and mess around with moms make-up- . But not this girl. She did what the boys did. She would come back and shoot around with her friend everyday. When this hoopster got to college she didnt concentrate on home economics, elementary education or child development or even physics or police science. She played basketball, just as she did all the way through high school where she was always one of the top players in the nine-year-o- league. When you watch Rene Ramsey play basketball, youre watching someone whos played the game for over 13 years. She knows how to shoot (she set a school record at her high school in Las Vegas by scoring 44 points in a game) and play the inside game as well. Its a game she takes seriously! After high school graduation, Ramsey hoped to continue her basketball career. In her pursuit of a everything, and I said to myself, Utah? Ive never been to Utah! Ill go someplace Ive never been,. ..It sounded like a good deal. Adams then went down to talk to Ramsey and watch her play. She and her mother came up to visit SUSC. Like most people, she fell in love with the campus, and decided to come play. I was kind of by myselt, and so I didnt talk to anybody when I first got here. But I started being more sociable after a few weeks with the team. As she was enjoying playing for SUSC, adversity struck her again. This time Adams came to her apartment with some more bad news. He told her that she had repeated a class at her previous college in Las Vegas and that she would be ineligible to finish the year. At the time the and really playing well, and they team was forfeited those games. She then had to wait one more year to play ball. If you want something bad. 'enough, you have to go about and get it, and usually the only way to get it is by being aggressive, and that is what Ramsey has done. She loves to play the inside game, ramming and banging bodies inside. Ramsey is putting two seasons of basketball into one. She is one of the leading rebounders in all of District 7, with over 8.6 rebounds a game. At the beginning of the year my play was affecced a little because of what happened last year, she admits. But things started to fall together. I now feel really confident with our team, and I know we can do it. This is the best womens team weve ever had. According to Ramsey, the ladies dont get any recognition for their play. It breaks my heart, that we work just as hard as the men do and we dont get anybody at our games. I mean what do they expect us to do, dunk a basketball? I dont know but Ill play for whoevers there. There is almost always somebody there though. Don Thompson, the older man sitting on the front row under the west basket, has been coming to their games for the last three years. He wears a that says, Number One Lady T- - Bird fan. The Ladies go over and shake Thompsons hand when they are introduced before the game. Ramsey said, He deserves it! The team deserves something too, and Ramsey is one of the people who can give it to tnem. Adams said, Her attitude has been real good, especially from half the season on. Shes playing good defense. ..and is one of our keys to our success. Shes respected by all of her teammates. Ramsey adds, I feel my role on the team is being the talker. They say they like it when I talk out there on the court. It makes them keep their mind on playing hard. She goes on, I like to focus on rebounding. We have to get the boards to score. They (opposing players) knock me down, and Ive been elbowed in the eye twice this year. the whole And I even had a girl hold my Monday Marcfi 3, 1986 Page 13 ELECTION SPECIAL BUY ONE SOFT FLOUR TACO & GET ONE FREE! , 830 South Main Street, Good only at Taco Time Cedar City, Utah, 84720 Limit one coupon per customer, per visit. My coach never wrote a letter, or anything. I had to do it all by myself, she said. But her break came while playing in a Las Vegas high school game. The coach at the University of Hawaii watched her and another girl play, and afterward offered them a chance to play at Hawaii. She was there for two years. A change in the coaching staff changed her desire to play there, because she and the new coach didnt see eye to eye. He was starting rumors of maybe taking all the girls scholarships off and starting all over again. ..and we werent on good terms. Ramsey said she was no longer happy being in Hawaii, and went back home to attend a community college. She didnt have any interest in playing the next year after the experience in Hawaii. But the fever came back in a vengeance. Gwen Thomas, a friend who played here, told her that Coach Boyd Adams needed a couple of players. She told me how nice the campus was, and all-st- rt game. But she does her share too. I throw elbows too. Im not out to hurt anybody, but you have to be physical cause thats just the game. And if youre an emotional person it could take you out of the game. But Ramsey maintains her cool. When its all over, Ramsey plans on finishing school and becoming a social worker. Im going to be really serious about the books. I like being a student, but Im going to miss being an athlete also, she concludes.
