Show Page 6 Monday Marcfi 3, 1986 The Thunderbird Voters to elect three senators from each school communication departments get a greater voice in the student government. The Star party wants to add new programs and build up the ones we already have, Johnson added. The Star party is being represented by Suzanne Corry, Johnson, and Monica Moe in the School of BTC. For the School of Arts and Letters, each party agreed that there needs to be equal distribution of funding for clubs and organizations. However, where that funding is to be distributed is where the opinions differ. RP candidate Mike Brady said that the theatre department is underfunded because it has to build up its own funds, which he called grossly unfair. After I finished doing that, he said, Id help out the baseball team, because they're in the same boat. The other Real Peoples party candidate, Fred Bland, feels that the athletic clubs receive too much funding, while the academic clubs dont receive enough. Other views that Bland has taken are those which promote excellence, such as getting other clubs to follow the examples of those who can raise their own funds. Bland claims that clubs doing well should receive more funding so that others will follow suit. RP candidate Scott Wheeler said he is pushing progress for the school. At times SUSC is too conservative; we need to be progressive in order to grow, Wheeler commented. However, he also wants to prevent certain changes from taking place, such as the law that was wanting to be passed last year about whether students should be able to see movies on campus. I would also like to see more scholarships, especially he added. in the behavioral science department, . he Star party, which is being represented by Jana Bunnell, Jeff Ingman, and Sonja Guess, stated in its pamphlet that it would allot each club and organization a fair and just distribution, thus providing equal opurtunities for all departments. The Star party also added that it planned to GRE promote test preparation classes and BY HEATHER HARVEY SUSC students will elect three senators from each of the colleges four schools Wednesday. Campaigning for the slots has been brisk and party organizers expect a good turnout at the polls. For the School of Business, Technology and Communication there have been several changes proposed by both the Star and Real People parties. We would like to have more activities, more job placements, and more internships, especially in the communication department, said RP senatorial candidate Daniel Gowan. "I want to make sure that the fees dont go up. Well lose mere students if they do. According to Lisa Laird, a campaign organizer for the RP party, the School of Business, Technololgy and Communication doesnt get much recognition from the campus, which would be another aspect of that department that that party would like to see changed. The Star party indicates that it would like to see many of the same things. It has listed its three most important issues to take care of first and foremost as establishing an internship for field exposure and more placement potential; establishing an intra-schocouncil including faculty, students and senators meeting regularly; and establishing classes, which would prepare students for such tests as the LSAT and GMAT tests. According to Robert Johnson, candidate of the Star party for the school, he would like to see more recognition, also, for the industrial education department, and bring unity with that building and the main campus. If people could see what weve accomplished, theyd be more excited; and then maybe we could promote some interest and have people just start taking the classes over there for the fun of it, he commented. Johnson also said hed like to see more representation of different clubs, and see the business and e 7 70 '5 n n nf M Li u i. and LSAT exams in order to provide better opportunities for our graduates, and also provide information on graduate schools concerning scholarships, financial aid, etc., in the liberal arts area. Its really important to unite all of the departments so that they are all equal to one another, because until that happens, each club feels that their specific club needs more money than the next, said Brady. In order to balance the budget equally, you have to have comitatos, or brotherhood; without that, everyones selfish, he said. The School of Science is being represented by Star party candidates Kon Kontogiannis, Todd Plumb, and Dane Boren, and Real People's Party candidates Megan Ryan, Natalie Wood, and James Mason. The Star partys platform is that it seeks to establish classes which will prepare students for such tests as the DAT, MCAT, and OCAT exams. Candidates said they also want to establish an intraschool council that would involve both the faculty and the students, and the senators; a council which would meet regularly, exchanging opinions, compliments, and complaints. And finally, they want to take immediate action to Replenish laboratory supplies within the School of Science. The Real Peoples party but several others they didnt address these ideas, say are just as important. According to Ryan, there is too much separation between the clubs. I agree with many of the Star partys ideas, she said, adding that if she is elected, these ideas would not be forgotten. Representing the School of Education on the Real Peoples party side is Doug Jacobs, who said that he would try to strengthen the ties between the faculty and the students, encourage participation in the already existing programs, and provide more information on students obtaining financial aid and scholarships available to education majors. Representing the Star party in this school are Varlin Law, Carma Chappell, and Marty Prettyman. v I I Li Goals: Promote Guest Lecture ji rn UYJ 1. Series 2.
