I we? Another thing that throws our paranoid conservatives into a tizzy is the use of sex subliminally in advertising. You may not like it but thats how it goes. Millions and millions of advertising dollars are spent researching a consumers demographics and psychographics. What they find is that sex sells merchandise, be it blatant and obvious, or sneaky. The recent controversy about Continental Airlines Cheap frills campaign is a perfectly good example. Here is a woman, talking to her lover while soaking in a bathtub with Mr. Bubble. She accepts an invitation for a weekend of cheap frills. Big deal. So what. For those paranoid conservatives who disapprove of premarital sex, lets just suppose that this woman is married, and the man on the other end of that phone is her husband. Is it okay now? And how does this commercial differ from the millions of others that utilize the sex sell? How about the scantily clad young woman who drapes herself across the hood of Ford Granada? Isnt a Granada supposed to be a family car? Whats my point? My point is that one should take advertising with a grain of salt. I remember a fourth grade class of mine that dedicated a week to educate us on the deceptiveness of advertising. It was during the Watergate scandal that 1 grieved, because the few commercials they gave me were precious and I could no longer fantasize that there really was a Tidy Bowl man in the toilet. I also could no longer harass my mother because she didnt wake up with lipstick perfectly applied like the lady on the commercial. I remember thinking, Im growing up. This nasty little devil can be found just about anywhere. He often occupies positions of authority. The paranoid conservative holds religious, legislative and parental positions nationwide, imposing his moral propaganda to unexpecting specimens of naivete. And he gets away with it. Perhaps I need to explain that. Heres an example that maybe you can relate to. During Christmas break, I made my usual journey to the comfortable suburban dwelling of my parents. My mother, an extremely organized woman, keeps a memo pad on her desk to remind her of the many activities she will participate in for the week. Monday, tennis. Tuesday, tennis. Wednesday, tennis. Thursday, Girl Scout meeting. Guest speaker from Planned Parenthood. No discussion of birth control. Friday, tennis. And so on. But wait, whats wrong with Thursdays agenda? A Planned Parenthood speaker will address some very important topics to 5 year old girls and will not discuss birth control? So Im assuming the and speaker will discuss boys, acne, physical blossoming, menstruation. Excluding acne, what are boys, physical blossoming and menstruation usually associated with? Isnt it appropriate that birth control be gracefully weaved into the conversation? Its not as if free samples will be distributed to the youngsters. When will these paranoid conservatives realize that morals are not built or broken in one day. Years and years of careful upbringing will shape and mold the morals of a child. It has been said that ignorance is bliss, and that may be true. But the facts are that millions of children are having babies these days. If you are a parent, you may wish your child to be a virgin when he or she gets married.
