Show The Thunderbird Monday December 2, 198 5 Page 11 Bishop returns to grid helm Lady Birds fall in season opener (continued from page 1) BY KEN COX The basketball season began on a losing note Saturday for the SUSC Lady Birds as they were 1 downed Pomona in War by Memorial Fieldhouse. Pomona, the NCAA Division II defending champions, used quickness and strength in causing the Birds to turn the ball over 22 times while being outrebounded y According to SUSC Coach Boyd Adams is the classiest womens team to play here. They are the defending champions and its easy to see why. The Broncos, who never trailed after the two minute mark, were led by Debbie Flett with 17 points and Marcine Edmonds with 16. Flett hit 100 percent from the field hitting eight for eight, Edmonds hit 10 for 10 from the line. Vickie Mitchell led all rebounders with 11. Denise Muir led the Lady Birds losing cause with 12 points, Rene Ramsey led SUSC in rebounding with six. Pomona shot 57 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the line while SU shot only 30 percent and 54 percent respectively. The Lady Birds were outscored 27-- 5 for a 10 minute stretch in the first half. Adams said he expects his team to rebound from the loss and become one of the top conference teams. SUSC has a lot of work ahead of it but will be OK according to Adams. There are adjustments to make and hard work ahead, but well be along, Adams said. will travel to Salt Lake Next week the City to participate in the University of Utah tournament. SUSC is scheduled to meet Loyola Marymount in the first round. Utah will be pitted against Weber State. On Dec. 13 and 14 the Lady Birds will travel to California to meet University of California-Riversid- e and Cal State Northridge. Bishop indicated an intent to have a recruitment staff oragnized by the first of the year, that will utilize volunteer, and fulltime, part-timgraduate assistant coaches. He also plans to meet with current team members as soon as possible to evaluate each players status in regards to football, academics, and citizenship. The Thunderbirds will play in the highly competitive Western Football Conference, an NCAA Division II league, beginning next year. Bishop is expected to attend WFC meetings this week in Portland, Ore., to plan for the transition. Bishop said he is exicited about the direction the SUSC football program is going. He feels that President (Gerald R.) Sherratt and Dr. Lunt are dedicated to the program and are putting the necessary emphasis on it for us to be competitive in the new conference. We are taking a step up to a new level of competition, and Im pleased with the obvious commitment and support of the college in the move, said Bishop. Prior to coming to SUSC, Bishop served as head football, track, and wrestling coach for Cedar City High School, as well as assistant football coach and head wrestling coach at Wasatch High School in Heber City.
