Not valid with any other offer or a Junior Roast Beef sandwich Harry Swanson, an instructor at SUSC, addressed the issue of information needs for small business development from a consumers point of view at a recent Regional Information Service convention. RIS seeks to explore public and private partnerships to provide services to rural Americans. The organization contends that 30 percent of the population lives in rural areas, but presently, most rural communities are not served by technology or service vendors. As director for the Small Business Development Center at SUSC, Swanson brought a wealth of practical information to the recent conference held in Las Vegas, Nev., says RIS officials. Small businesses, to be successful, have needs for information and for training that arent being met through Convenience Stores Located at all three Interchanges in Cedar City 24 Were open hours a day for your convenience Snacks, Pops, Hot Dogs, Magazines; and Much More Master Card Visa C-ma- rt 1-- 15 the programs and services available in the Intermountain West, said Swanson. The population in rural areas is small and scattered over large distances, and this makes it difficult to serve the needs of small businesses. He said that the West has undergone a series of traumatic Parking may be problem (continued from page Soon Coming Christmas Gits Unique Mythological and Shakespearean Figurines Theatre Masks, Pins, Chnnis etc. Pfush Stuffed Aninuds O id ElujCish Cottages And much more 3 586-013- 2 98 West Center 1) million was generated in less than nine months. Translated to a per capita figure, the campaign raised about $150 for each man, woman and child in Iron County, officials said. But the Centrum is not only a modern special events center for SUSC students, it is also likely to be a boon for the areas economy, according to acting Centrum coordinator Lana Johnson. According to Johnson, the building cost $8 million to build, and that is expected to directly benefit the city to the tune of roughly $6 million. Moreover, she wrote in a report on the subject, the Centrum will allow the city to host large conventions. She also indicated that the Utah Summer Games to be held July 5 and featuring 1,000 athletes and many spectators was made possible in large part because of the Centrum. The building has been designated as a mixed-us- e facility, combining the special events center arena with classrooms and other academic areas which surround it. It will include a multipurpose arena, classrooms, faculty offices, psychology labs, artists studios and a television facility. The tournament will feature the and three other teams Biola University, Chapman College and the University of LaVerne. Biola is the favorite, but no one is counting out the SUSC team. Parking will be at a premium Friday night, but SUSC Security Chief Kent Hoyt has developed a plan to facilitate the crowd, officials said. Two parking areas immediately north and south of the Centrum will be reserved for special guests. A third area, the parking lot east of the Physical Education Building, is being reserved for buses, but is also available to the general public. 4-- 586-155- economic shifts which small businesses must deal with in order to survive. In areas like Evanston, Douglas or Rock Springs, Wyo., dramatic population increases related to the development of oil and coal reserves created a boom cycle. Now some of the small businesses face a downturn in the economy because of the energy glut. Other small communities in the Midwest are facing problems related to the downturn in agriculture which affects other sectors of the American economy, said Swanson. Swanson contends that small business in rural communities is not generally adopting technologies such as computer management systems for several reasons. Most small businesses want to see what it (technology) can do for them before making a substantial investment in equipment and training, but small business will have to adopt to survive the competition, Swanson said. Both RIS and the Small Business Development Center at SUSC can provide information about small business in rural areas. Ye Merry Wives lower & f Gift shoppe |
