Students at SUSC are no longer in awe of their counterparts at the larger institutions, indeed they now know they are their equal and, increasingly, their betters. In state and national competitions they are walking off with top honors. Their acceptance rate into graduate and professional schools is exceptional. And in some areas, they have become the pride not merely of Utah, but of the nation as well. It is a success story that all who live in southern Utah can savor. Samuel Johnson was right, academic excellence cannot be achieved through casual scholarship. It is nearly always the result of hard work and dedication. And that is why Southern Utah State College has elected to tighten up its standards for admission, to demand scholastic rigor, and to insist that the emphasis at the College is always on the ma.in tent of education and not on the side shows. It is harder to get into SUSC than ever before, and harder to graduate. The College insists that every student who enters its doors be committed to the full realization of the potentials within them. And by the time they graduate that they have acquired genuine literacy: the ability to write and speak with clarity and force, and the corresponding ability to grasp, without confusion, the written and spoken word.
