Show Page 8 The Thunderbird Monday May 13, 1985 Solar group tours campus "r Members of Utahs Solar Advisory Committee will visit SUSC Dixie Leavitt Business Thursday to tour the colleges Building and to hold a public meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. for those interested in renewable energy information. SAC is a citizens advisory group affiliated with the Utah Energy Office. Membership is made up of private citizens and representatives from public utilities, solar industry and various political organizations. The SUSC stop is one of several planned by the committee on a two-da- y tour of southern Utah that starts early Thursday with a stop at the UP&lL Roosevelt Hot Springs Power Plant near Milford and ends the afternoon Friday with a look at a solar water system in Snow Canyon State Park. Also on the agenda for committee members are tours of a passive solar home and an envelope house in Cedar City, a small hydroelectric site in LaVerkin, a steel wind tower manufacturing facility in St. George, a solar school in Santa Clara and a wind anemometer located near Ivins. The Leavitt Business Building is a SAC demonstration project. Dale Brinkerhoff, superintendent of alterations and repairs at the college, indicates that the active solar system heats water which is used to heat the building. It also heats the swimming pool water in the Physical Education Building. Schriock said the magazine will be available by Monday afternoon for $1.50 in the college bookstore and at the English department, top floor of Old Administration. e The magazine includes the literary efforts of SUSC students, staff and faculty, as well as poems by two poets: William Stafford and William ODaly, Schriock said. The art work of SUSCs Brad Holt illustrates the magazine, he said. Students whose work appears in the magazine will each receive a free copy, available from the English department secretary, Schriock said. He said the number of submissions for this years magazine was higher than anyone expected, and most of the writing was of a high quality. We think students will be pleased by the magazine, he said. It includes a great deal of very fine writing. well-know- n Blanchard in Whos Who Don Blanchard has been named to the 20th edition of in the West. Blanchard is a professor of industrial education and head of the SUSC department of industrial education. Last fall Blanchard was named to Whos Who in Technology Today, and cited for his overall achievements in the field of electronics. Blanchard joined the SUSC facility in 1964. Among the honors he has received is the Utah Vocational Associations 1984 award as Teacher of the Year in Trades and Industries. He is the author of two books and has had several articles published dealing with educational technology, most recently School Shop articles on the construction of anodized aluminum boxes for electronics projects and on making customized molds for use with plastic injection molders.
