The Thunderbirds look solid and deep at both inside and outside linebacking positions, and the defensive interior should be plenty adequate. SUSC should be up among the prime contenders for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship again this year. The 'Birds will probably not rate the kingpin favorite's role; that will probably go to Mesa, a national NAIA finalist each of the last two years. SUSC however will be dangerous again this season. "We have very good athletes they are quick, fast and strong. Whether they are good football players remains to be seen," Conrad says of his large crew of new players. 'We will depend rather heavily on transfers this season. Right now I'm optimistic about how well they will fit in the spots vacated by a large number of graduating players." The biggest question mark for the 1984 Southern Utah State College football team is how well a bundle of new people come together and play as a unit. A secondary question is how quickly the new people blend into a cohesive team. Offensively Head Coach Don Conrad expects the Thunderbirds to be versatile and effective, if the quarterback spot can be adequately filled. There is good quality in the skill positions. Receivers show good promise, and veteran Juan Henderson and transfer Bobby Dyer are solid runners. The offensive line will have some new faces, but veterans Rock Lopour and Dale Loveland will provide the needed anchor of experience. to continue Defensively, look for the to be strong. The major "if" is the defensive backfield, where there will be an almost entirely new look. The SUSC coach's brother, Val, will also become a charter member of the American Softball Association sanctioned Hall of Fame. Leah Peterson, Woods Cross, mother of the brother-siste- r inductees, probably also deserves a place among those honored. She's the one who taught both of them how to pitch. "She was extremely supportive," Joy says. "Most people just figure that I learned what I did about softball and especially pitching from my older brother, but that isn't the case. We both learned how to pitch from mom." The two Petersons along with 42 other initial inductees will be honored July 19 at the "1st Motel in Utah Softball Reunion" at the Salt Lake City. Formal induction ceremonies will be held the next evening at 8:30 p.m. at the Cottonwood Softball Complex, 4400 South 13th East, Salt Lake City.
