Show The Thunderbird Monday, May 7, 1984 Thinclads fifth in RMAC The SUSC track team finished in fifth place Friday in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships held in Gunnison, Colo. Thunderbird thinclads placed in the meet with some surprise performances in some events and disappointments in others. Aaron Sampson finished first in the long jump with a leap of 24 feet 5 inches. Sampsons twin Adrian was literally right on his heels for second place with a jump of 23 feet 8 inches. SUSCs 4x100 relay team of the Sampson twins, Will James and Rob Watson finished as the fastest quartet in the conference this year with a time of 41.8 seconds. The surprise among the Thunderbirds was the first place finish of Leo Biggs in the javelin. Biggs, only a freshman, finished first with a heave of 189 feet 5 inches. Weather for the event was anything but It was cold, long jump accommodating. champion Aaron Sampson said of the championships, held at an elevation of 7,800 feet. Lisa Bouwhuis finished first in the womens javelin with a 116 foot 10 inch toss. Teammate Colleen Hawkins finished second in the shot put for the womens team. R.B. Mug tourney is slated The spring tradition of sports continues at SUSC with the fifth annual R.B. Mug Invitational Golf Tournament slated for May 16. The R.B. Mug is somewhat of a classic among sporting events at SUSC, each year giving linksters a chance to display golfing finesse, as well as madness. The tournament began five years ago after SUSC golf team members made a bet on a round of golf with the winner receiving a mug of root beer, hence the R.B. Mug tournament. This years tournament directors Jerry Mouse Roberts and Dean Cooper are looking forward to the many events, all relating to golf. fun-fille- d Events this year include craziest dress an award Cooper has won the last three years the longest drive off a mattress, the longest club throw, the closest ball to a six pack, the longest drive with a baseball bat and the coveted Hack of the Year award. Last years winners were Newell Leavitt, Kelly Baker, Bob August and Cliff Christiansen, who fired a tournament record 14 under par 58. Roberts is expecting some excellent golfing in this years tournament, not to mention a lot of fun. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place finishers as well as to the winners of the individual events. Lady Birds to host next tourney tie.
