The womens softballers won three out of four games in the two day tournament beating Mesa in the finale for the womens District Seven softball championship Saturday.' At the conclusion of the game head softball coach Joy Peterson was nominated as the RMAC Coach of the Year. The softballers won the first game of the tournament beating Metro State from Denver, Colo., Becky Peterson was the winning pitcher and helped the team out by parking a bases loaded home run. We played good all around offense and defense, said Coach Peterson. I was very pleased with our performance. We made some base running mistakes, if the game was close it might have affected us, added Peterson. We got good hitting out of everyone. . The second game on Friday saw SUSC and Mesa College of Grand Junction, Colo., battle in a low scoring 2 victory for SUSC. Mesa established a 0 lead in the top of the first inning. However, in the third inning the Lady were threatening to take the lead but with the bases loaded they only managed to come away with one run. The womens softballers put it away in the bottomNof the seventh when Peterson hit a double to give the women their second victory in as many tries. Saturday the Lady softballers controlled their own destiny losing the first game 2 but winning the second game The women could have wrapped up the championship by winning the first game but chose 11-- 3-- 2-- 6-- 7-- 4. Linksters clubbing for title Kris A begglen gets set to putt during a practice round last week at Cedar Ridge Golf Course. The SUSC golf team will attempt to extend its winning streak today and tomorrow as the members compete in the NAIA District 7 championships in Phoenix. Thunderbird linksters are considered one of the favorites in the 54 hole tournament scheduled for today and tomorrow. SUSC will be competing against Grand Canyon College, Western New Mexico, Southern Colorado, Eastern New Mexico and Denver 1 Iniveisity. Id have to say that Eastern New Mexico is the team to beat, golf coach Tom Kingsford said. Eastern has an excellent golf tradition, and, from what I hear, has some excellent players this year. One of the other favorites will be host Grand have defeated Canyon College, a team the five times this year. Grand Canyon will be hosting the tourney on the Mummy Mountain golf course, a course that SUSC golfers are familiar with. Weve got quite a bit of an advantage. Our team can hit the ball longer than any other team, team member Jerry Ellefsen said. The Mummy Mountain course offers an edge to long ball hitters with long fairways. Kingsford is expecting some good competition on the course from all of the teams. There are some good golf teams in the district this year, he pointed out. I would think that any team good enough to make district tournament could have a good day and win it all, and that includes us. We would, however, have to play better than we did in the RMAC meet to win the district. Last year Grand Canyon defeated the Thunderbirds by a single stroke to win the tournament. SUSC is looking forward to meeting Grand Canyon again in the championships. Weve all got to be consistent, SUSCs Stuart Adams said. If we dont shoot consistent rounds we dont have a prayer. If we play our game its all over. Adams brought home medalist honors from last weeks RMAC tourney and, according to Kingsford, should do well in Phoenix. SUSC will also get some good play out of Ken Mason, who is really coming on, said Kingsford and Masons temmates. Mason managed a third place finish in last weeks championship. If the Thunderbirds can win the district title then the next tee off will be at Saginaw Valley State University June 5-- |
