The hopes will be confirmed or denied this week as the ready for the final two games of the season against Adams State on Thursday and Ft. Lewis on Saturday. Were playing very, very well right now, basketball head mentor Bob Schermerhorn said, in lieu of last weeks thrashing of Colorado Mines. Thunderbird cagers destroyed Mines in a lopsided 110 to 81 victory. The Mines contest was only a tuneup as far as many fans were concerned, the Miners have been a struggling team throughout the season. For Coach horn and the Birds the game was much more though. "That was good for our fans, Schermerhorn said after the win. The 110 point explosion was good for the fans and the victory integral in Thunderbird playoff aspirations. It was, perhaps, the teams finest overall offensive performance of the year. Thunderbird cagers controlled the d game from opening tipoff to final buzzer with excellent basketball skill. We made a lot of exciting plays, Schermerhorn pointed out. with Excitement seemed universal among the scorched Daniels the Shawn the in contest. everyone scoring Miners with a sizzling 28 point performance. Excitement was also on Gary Glovers mind. Glover emerged from pine time to prime time with a 16 point venture in the contest. Lady Birds into playoffs by Orin Allen The SUSC Lady were victorious over a much improved Colorado Mines team in a thrilling Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest last Monday, but dropped a nonconference match to Northern Arizona Saturday. Battling through a seesaw first half, the Thunderbirds and Lady Miners traded baskets. During the second half CSM had established themselves offensively, leading by as many as eight points. Trailing by a single point with four seconds remaining, Gwen Thomas stole an inbound pass and hit an open Lisa Ballantyne who converted the layup giving the Lady Birds a 5 victory. We were lucky to win this game, but we made our breaks and came back when it counted, Lady Bird Coach Boyd Adams said. When the going got tough we got tough. Lisa Stolk led all scorers contributing 14 points and pulling down nine rebounds. The Lady Thunderbirds chased NAU but found themselves on the short end of the free throw situation. SUSC didnt get a trip to the charity stripe until the last 54 seconds of the game. For the Lady Thunderbirds its on to this weeks home games against Adams State and Ft. Lewis and then the playoffs. Were in the playoffs now, Adams said.
