Show Registration made easier by early check distribution One of the disadvantages of attending a college on the quarter system is the hassles and inherent headaches of having to complete the registration process three times each academic year. Probably every student on campus has suffered through the lengthy lines in the Administration Building, watching the clock anxiously, hoping to make it to the front before the next class is scheduled. But the introduction of a new policy for spring quarter may help end at least some of those wearisome problems. The Financial Aids department has approved the issuance of grant and National Direct Student Loan checks two days before registration for spring quarter, which should prove to be a bonus for students. According to Jack Cannon, director of financial aids, the proposal was initiated by his department in order to help students avoid the congestion of registration and also to facilitate the process in the business offices. The checks will be available on March 19 and 20, allowing those who have preregistered to pay their fees early. But Cannon warned that the issuance of early checks does not extend to Guaranteed Student Loans. GSL checks cannot be released until the first day of class, (February 21) by law, he said. This is the first year that SUSC has had the use of a computerized registration system, but in spite of a quicker, more efficient system the hours spent standing in registration and fee payment lines can still cause problems for many students. Waiting for checks to come in only increased the amount of time spent on registration because checks werent available until the first day of classes. Students were forced to pick up their checks, pay tuition and fees and buy books all in the same day. Because of some quick thinking on the part of our administrators, students can pick up checks early and avoid the lines, a move The Thunderbird heartily approves last-minu- te How do you feel about SUSC having Friday off in observance of Presidents Holiday instead of today? of.
