Thats what SUSC basketball team members may start calling themselves after Saturdays game against the conference leading Southern Colorado Indians. In their first home game in more than a month the Thunderbirds stunned the Indians and for the second time they knocked a team out of first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Birds topped the Mesa Mavericks in Grand Junction, Colo., last week. Blasting their way out to a 12 to 2 lead early in the game against the Indians, the Thunderbirds parlayed an excellent team effort into a lead they never relinquished. The two-da- y many forme outstanding high school wrestlers now attending SL'SC. Ken Goldirg, director of the tournament, was pleased with the participation and the individual performances of the grapplers. ' We had some good quality wrestlers. Every winner in each division was a good wrestler, Golding said. Several weight divisions had to be combined due to a lack of wrestlers hut even then matches seemed to be balanced and even. 5 In the pound weight division Scott Gessell defeated Scott Mitchell for the championship. 5 The pound class featured two excellent wrestlers in McKay Shields and Jay Hill. Shields emerged as the victor to win the division title. 5 The pound weight division pitted an expe-iencSteve Camp against a tough Mike Stoedter. Camp was able use his experience, defeating Stoedter by points for the championship. ' 135-14- 145-15- ed 155-16- In the pound division Bart Reynolds and David Garrett battled for the championship. Both wrestlers were highly skilled and Reynolds eventually gained the championship title by a pin. The pound weight category featured Jeff Lewis and Steve Johnson fighting for the top spot in the division. Lewis and Johnson were forced to wrestle twice within 30 minutes due to double elimination. Lewis won both battles to win the title. 165-17- 185-19- 5 5 The heavyweight division, 185 pounds and up, develop ed into a match just short of a brawl with Dirk Lopour and Vance Casperson going for broke and the title. The two grapplers used both knowledge and experience but in the long run conditioning proved to be the key. Lopour used strength and conditioning to capture the division crown. j j Some of them could be wrestling on a varsity collegiai e level," indicated Joe Lopour, a former wrestling coach. I could see about seven or eight of them that could have been wrestling for me. SUSC to induct three athletes into Hall of Fame Athletes from three different decades honored Feb. 25 when Southern Utah State College inducts three new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame. Ren Taylor, Cedar City; Carlson Chick Terry, Murray; and the late Frank Huz Ward, Red Lodge, Mont., will be added to the roll of outstanding former SUSC coaches and athletes. will be New members of the hall of fame family members will meet the public at an open house from 7 p.m. at the residence of SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt. Induction ceremonies will be held during halftime Lewis basketball game of the SUSC-Folater that night. We at SUSC are pleased to honor those who have helped the school build such a proud athletic tradition. The Thunderbirds were able to follow their offensive strategy against USC by going inside to their big men. Senior center Bob Evans had his best game of the year. Evans scored 14 points in the contest and when he couldnt shoot he passed the ball back out to the perimeter where someone else could. Thats the best big Bob has played all year, Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn said. John Pierce, another of the SUSC front line crew, canned 16 points and yanked down nine rebounds in the winning effort. Pierce has been a consistent factor in recent Thunderbird wins by combining solid inside skills and excellent perimeter shooting. This tempo was better suited to us with our big men, Evans said. The tempo of the game was fast and furious with Southern Colorado playing n defense the entire game and full a court press. The utilizing though consistently broke the back of the press and the Indians could do little to stop them. We did a good job of attacking assault them, Evans indicated of the on offense. SUSCs Shawn Daniels once again took command in the charge on the Indians. The 62 junior scored 16 points to share high game honors with Pierce. The Thunderbirds are again in War Memorial Fieldhouse tonight for a 7:30 p.m. encounter with the Colorado School of Mines. The Birds defeated the Miners 86-7- 7 on Jan. 6. man-to-ma- |
