Schermerhorn is in his first year as T Bird coach. E f 0Mi & 5S S o N S 1983 -- Coaching's not work for Horn' by Paul Husselbee Bob Schermerhorn says he steals money for a living. That doesnt mean Coach Horn, the new head basketball coach at Southern Utah State College, is a thief. It just means he doesnt see his job as work. Im a very lucky man, Schermerhorn said. I have a job that I dont consider a job. Sure, if I were to be doing something else, Id probably be making a lot more money. ..but I dont work, I steal money from SUSC. Its my job, but its not work, because I love basketball. It would appear that Schermerhorn practices what he says. The Thunderbird hoop mentor can be seen on the floor in War Memorial Fieldhouse at almost any hour of the day, working with individual players or drilling his team. Hobbies? Schermerhorn asked with a chuckle. I dont have any hobbies. Im into two things: my family and basketball. Indeed. Schermerhorn describes himself as an I dont have any hobbies. into two things: my family Im and basketball. excitable coach who is thoroughly engrossed with the game of basketball. During basketball practice, he constantly studies players and offers bits and pieces of advice that add up to mean a big difference to his players. Assistant coaches normally run the drills, while Schermerhorn stands to the side, analyzing his teams performance. However, theres no doubt in anyones mind as to whos in charge and gives the directions. At regular intervals, Horn blows hit, whistle and comes flying off the sideline, either to praise a particular play or player, or to give his team a kick in the pants. I get excited now and then, but thats part of the job, Scheimerhorn said. The players know what theyre supposed to do and what we as coaches expect of them. When they dont do it, they know I have a right to ask them whats going Surprisingly, Schermerhorn did not play high school basketball. He attended South Bend Central High, where the team was one of the best in the nation. Competition was tough, and Schermerhorn noted that one of the better players for his rival was Oscar Robertson, schools who had an illustrious NBA career and has since been inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame. One of the coaches at my high school was a gentleman by the name of John Wooden, so you know our team was no slouch, Schermerhorn said. After coming out of the Marine Corps in 1965, Schermerhorn said he struggled through college in order to become a high school coach. I had always wanted to coach basketball, and so I made the necessary effort, stayed in college five years, and got my first coaching opportunity, he said. Schermerhorn played three years of college basketball and later served as an assistant coach at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif., for two years while finishing his education. I took this job because wanted to be a head coach again, and I wanted to go to a place where there would be a good environment for my family, Schermerhorn said. I have always wanted e coach. There are benefits at a to be a place like SUSC that are not available at a bigger school like There are 12,000 people in Cedar City who I am hoping will support us if we get something big going here, he added. As a coach, Schermerhorn said several people are very important to him, and he gives them the credit he feels they are due. A good athletic director can take a lot of worries away from coaches, and Dr. Steve Lunt is one of the best Ive seen, Schermerhorn said. He never stops working ..hes a workaholic and it sure helps me a lot. The support of a college president can be vital to a teams success, Scherme'horn said. President (Gerald R.) Sherratt has takn the new arena we need and made it a reality, he said. Other schools Ive coached at can only dream of such luxuries. Basketball will probably always be a oart of his livelihood, Schermerhorn said. I hope can steal money and coach basketball the rest of my life. cross-tow- SATURDAY, NOV. 12 HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES n 9:30 a.m.: Parade begins. 1 1 :50 a.m.: at the stadium.
