Show Meadow Moving, Impressive Play By David L. Itself Jenks achievement that he L able tj breath-mlife into that most moribund of modem cant phrases. The play is autobiographical; the bttle boy is named Kenneth. As man and boy, he is telling us how it was back in Lyman, Wyo., im those days the hard, dryeerth and the hard, dry people. . i What 2je tpannot communicate is love. Those to whom communicate are tliose he loves most, iftlpjne!" he pleads, but they shrug and walk away, or slimg and look again at the clouds; he must help himself, as finally, much later, he does. Ki&father dies, and his grandmother, and his friend Jfunmy with the bowed legs that only hurt sometirry, and his dog Jack, who can talk but who cannot.Ttll tyt, tell Kenneth what he wants to know. This is not a grim play, however. Parts of it are very ft$r.y, nd Mr. Jenks has mingled skillfully the humoiMif-Jifand the horror of death. The humor owes "K. great deat, too, to the erformances. particuldflyhose of Larry Roupe, as Kenneth, and Joan Eflpin, 8 hit grandmother. e Mr. Roupe. who also directed, is an actor of, at times, more energy than subtlety. Here he starts off at great speed and volume; an evening of it would be intolerable. But as the play wears on, and the Embryo: Rocks character alters, grows, so does Mr. Roupe. In sum it is an impressive and moving performance. Excellent Perforonnee Joan Erbin is something else again. Her grandmother, a fussy, precise, rigid and absolutely upright Saint who urges her Mormon view of the world on an uncomprehending child. Is a carefully crafted, extremely intelligent performance. Mr. Jenks is an excellent writer, and In Mrs. Erbin he has an actress worthy of his words. Clearly she has thought about what she has to say; every sentence has been chewed and inwardly digested, and is offered forth with care and understanding. It is a pleasure to listen to her. Mr. Roupe has surrounded himself with a cast, mostly young, of surprisingly uniform excellence. None save Mrs. Erbin and at times Mr. Roupe himself are first-ratbut only one or two of the performances are either bad or poorly thought-ou- t There is not, what we so often find, an enormous difference between the level achieved by the major performers and that of the minor ones. Staging Problem? or could There is, be, a problem with the staging. Mr. Roupe has directed most of the play to the south tier of seats, which were filled Wednesday night. But suppose someone else had come? There are seats on both sides of the stage from which there is little to see but backs. The dearth of exciting actresses leaves Cukor fu! said. Its easier to create animal excitement for a man than a woman. Writing for women isnt as exciting. You cant put a woman in peril as naturally and believably as a man. "Today women are in the unhappy position of playing either prostitutes or secretaries to private detectives. And 1 truly dont know why that is in these days of liberated women caught up in all sorts of exciting enterprises. There are a great many talented actresses around but no one seems to be willing to give them a chance. Along with his reputation for being the leading director of women, Cukor was known as a stylist who specialized in light comedy. Cukor, through training and observation, knows what makes women tick especially actresses. But g one should note George Cukor has been a bachelor.
