Show THE SECOND TRIAL THE DEAN CASE AGAIN BEFORE THE COURT tine case of the united states vs jos JOB hdean was taken up in toe the third district court this afternoon OR on the former trial the jury disagreed standing four for acquittal and eight for conviction the following jurors j brors were called E M bynon louis bamberger 8 E underhill geo Morr Morri laon aon M dus geldorf sel dorf R P martin alfred thompson geo mullett jas winchester albert fischer I 1 S C pancake Pan eake J B W ileone louis bamberger was challenged and excused S C pancake and ande E M byon were peremptorily challenged by the de tense jos foster geo and J M harvey were called geo was peremptorily challenged by the defense jaseph foreman was called and took his place in the box he was on OB the grand jury which indicted the defendant and was excused wm mcray was accepted completing the jury the indictment charges the defendant with wilh unlawful cohabitation with sarah arab A dean and florence ridges I 1 i dean as his wives from january 1 i to april 1 1886 mrs sarah A dean was the first witness called the defense objected to her test i mony because she was defendants lawful wife objection overruled witness to mr dickson 1 I lived in t the he ward salt lake city from january it t to 0 april Aprill ast 1st st 1886 1 I was married to the defendent 10 years ago during the three months named my husband has lived with me florence ridges has lived at my house fhe bhe came in june or july 1885 and left about the first of lse I 1 saw tier her last in february 1886 when she remained at my house two or three days davs she visited my house before she cime came to 10 live there I 1 never returned the calls my husband left home in june 1885 and went to cache j county he be went one day and returned j the next I 1 have not heard beard of the whereabouts of florence ridges since I 1 saw her iak i february to mr rawlins my husband went I 1 to attend to business for his bis father to mr dickson I 1 have not known pf af his going away on business for his father before he said nothing about temple work to mr rawlins florence rl ridges adges lived at my house and assisted in dressmaking that was her business I 1 employed her to mr r dickson I 1 suggested the employment she received one half of the gross proceeds she boarded and ancl lodged in the ithe house there wa was no charge for room or board I 1 she did most of the dressmaking I 1 do not know how much a monta we earned it was perhaps between 20 20 and 30 1 I did not consult my husband about the cue arrangement during the ten years of my marriage I 1 do not remember florence ridges being in my house before aw 1886 I 1 was at her nome home several y years ea rs a ago g mrs A agatha diatha ridges testified florence floree ridges is my daughter she was 19 last december she is above medium height welgie about 1201 i pounds blonde complexion large i grown brown eyes has a mole on her neck neck not more than an eighth of an al inch across she made a visit to logan in june 1885 tad jad no relatives thure t sae was gone several days i she had never been there before or since alie lived at home before that time lime she had studied dressmaking dreas making for several years but had not goue gone out as we took in work she went to mr r deans about a week after she returned from logan and remained until about jan 1 she came to my house and stayed a day or two next went to mrs woods in davis county in february she made another visit home and returned to I 1 mrs woods I 1 last baw her at my house in june of this year when she remained one day the trial was in progress when we went to press |
