Show mm BALTIMORE AT PITTSBURGH Saturday, Dec. 27 11:00 A.M. Channel 2 The Baltimore Colts have beaten the rest . . . now they take on the very best. One of the most incredible Cinderella stories in NFL history, going from a 2 record last year to 10-- 4 this year, the Colts have proved theyre for real, but . . . are the mighty Steelers too much for them to handle? They're a cocky young team, and have shown no signs of being awed by the prospect of playing Pittsburgh, the defending Super Bowl champ that is generally favored to win it again. "We ll just have to go out, play our game, and win," said Colt quarterback Bert Jones matter-of-factl- y. we lose, it wont be because of pressure," said veteran tight end Raymond Chester. "Weve played under the greatest pressure for nine weeks now, knowing that a single loss would kill our playoff chances. Thats pressure, and weve held up." Indeed, the Colts have the NFC's longest win streak (nine games), and they no longer believe theres anything they "If cant do. Sudden success can do that to a team. But then there are the Steelers, the defending champions, who have been there and know what it takes to win. Even more important, though, Pittsburgh probably has the greatest amount of talent, position for position, of any team in the NFC. 1975 The Steelers are solid (the most awesome talent in the NFC, concedes AFC team on Chester), the second-ranke- d offense and second on defense. Baltimore, by comparison, is ranked sixth in the AFC in offense and seventh in defense. But the only payoff comes in the victory column, and the Colts have been consistent there by establishing themselves as a team that does whatever is necessary to 26, win. They arent overpowering on either offense or defense, but are capable of producing extraordinary performances by either unit. Weve become a team that does whatevers necessary, said rookie coach Ted Marchibroda. "Some weeks the offense stands out, other weeks it's the defense, but one is always picking up for the other." Heres what to look for: WHEN BALTIMORE HAS THE BALL The man to watch is Lydell Mitchell. He carried the ball 289 times and caught 60 passes. His yardage of 1,193 accounts for more than half of Baltimore's ground attack, and he's a pass catcher the Colts will look to on possession-typ- e pass plays of 1 0 yards or less. 1975 26, sure-hand- Friday, ed 7i.nn7. Qrri Ibll Quarterback Bert Jones, the third-yesharpshooter from LSU, has thrown for 2,500 yards and 1 8 touchdowns, completing neady 60 percent of his passes. He hasnt shown preference for a particular member of his receiver corps, letting defenses dictate whether his most popular target any given game will be Raymond Chester, Glenn Doughty or Roger Carr. It is Carr who is the most dangerous of the three, with touchdown receptions of 89 and 90 yards to his credit this season. But he has only 23 receptions for the year, while Doughty has 39, for an average of 1 7 yards per catch. The Colts go to a backfield of fullback Roosevelt Leaks and halfback Don McCauley when they need three yards or less, substituting for Mitchell and Bill Olds. The arrangement has been highly successful, but Leaks has missed the last three games with dislocated toes. He's expected back for this one, though. WHEN PITTSBURGH HAS THE BALL The Steelers will run until the Colts show they can stop them. Next to O. J. Simpson, Franco Harris is pro footballs best runner (1,246 yards), and his sidekick, Rocky Bleier, is a standout also. Baltimore's young defensive line is exceptionally quick off the ball, and the tackles are susceptible to trap plays. THE KEY Its a matter of which offensive line does a better job of handling the opposing front four. Pittsburgh's Steel Curtain is regarded as the finest in football, strengthened even further by the return of Joe Greene. He and his playmates, Ernie Holmes, Dwight White and L C. Greenwood, are especially adept at shutting down ground attacks and put a strong pass rush on passers. Baltimore's Sack Pack, meanwhile, led the NFL in bagging quarterbacks by nailing 60 of them. They're young, with ends John Dutton and Fred Cook just second-yea- r men and tackles Joe Ehrmann and Mike Barnes in their third seasons. If either team gets a sizable lead early, its front four will be able to rush recklessly and a quarterback or two might get buried.
