The daylong event featured Indian crafts, music and food. Visitors from Utah and neighboring states watched as Navajo craftsmen James C. Nuiueys U S Navy tombstone was lifted froma bed of flowers Saturday and laid to rest in a sea of garbage. Robert Nunley commemorated the first anniversary of his only sons death by throwing the stone in the city dump and replacing it with another inscribed: We lost our beloved son through the negligence and stupidity of the United States government and its agents. Timothy, 19, died of cancer in a Navy hospital in Jacksonville, Fa., Sept. 20, 1974. His parents say the vevy lolled him by failing to diagnose the disease and repeatedly refusing to admit him to a hospital until it was too late. The Nunleys a,e asking $6.5 million in a medical malpractice suit filed against the government in federal court in Jacksonville. Present at the brief graveside ceremony were Mr. s and Mrs. Nunley, their daughter and and grandchild, along with five newsmen. Mrs. Nunley sobbed on her daughters shoulder as her husband took a rusty shovel and dug up the military market. After laying the new stone in place, Nunley used a dolly to wheel the military headstone to his nearby pickup truck. At the dump, Nunley backed the truck to a garbage-fille- d pit and pushed the stone over the edge whore it came to rest face up on a pile of rubbish. Carl McAfee, Norton, Va., lawyer representing the Nunleys, told The Associated Press by telephone: ilad they gotten to him sooner, he would have lived; thats not even a bone of contention m this suit. Had they even listened to him in the beginning, he would have had a chance to survive, McAfee said. The suit claims that Timothy reported what he believed to be a tumor in his groin in September, 1973, while at boot camp in Orlando, Fla.
