request of gnes gres president ident john taylor I 1 arise to make a few remarks I 1 deeply and bin eln berely sympathize with tiye the family the wives and children of the deceased bro wiliam clayton who remain to mourn the loss of the society of their husband and father for a little season beason and yet net when we consider all the circumstance cir clr curn we wa may conclude that we have not very great cause to mourn for when a man has lived to a good old age I 1 worn out as it were through toll toil passes away we can realize at least that he las has accomplished his mission that he has performed his work on this earth and is ready to return to the father from whence he came behind the vail bro clayton had reached a ripe age after laboring unceasingly among his brethren from his hla first connection with the church he has had a long and varied we ox eiienne among people he was a friend and companion ot of the prophet joseph belin aud it was to his pen to a very great extent that we are indebted for tor the history of the church that is Js the hll hil history story of the prophet joseph more moro particularly ticul arly during bia hla acquaintance with him and the tion he acted for him achis as hla hia private secretary in to the dayta of nauvoo we have the journals which lie he kept thal that gime time t me in the historian historians offices office from which in connection with those of elders elderk willard richards ric Bic bards hards and wilford woodruff and the temm times and cind seasons a publication of the church at that time we have obtained the history of the church during that period it was his pen that wrote foahd first time the revelation in relation to the eternity of the marriage covenant and of a plurality of wives although that revelation had had hid been given to the prophet joseph many years bears before it was not written watten until tha of july 1843 at which time elder william olay clay clayton acting as scribe for the prophet wrote it irom his dictation I 1 am happy to say that thab he has left on record a statement in the shape of an affidavit prepared by himself in relation to this important subject for it is a subject that is of the most vital importance not only to the latter day saints but to the w whole world for wi without thou t the a knowledge contained in that revelation we weale weTie never ver could consummate the object of our mission to this carthee earth we never could fulfill fulfil the purposes of god jn in this estate T hake have thin paper in my eos posses POS hiis blun and have had for a number of months past in fact it was writ ten teu at my request and then given into my care and I 1 have preserved it with a aview view when thought proper to have it published and as it ia Is A a bermon sermon of itself II 11 would per perhaps limps be more interesting than anything I 1 could bay say on the pre pro sent occasion and therefore with ith prest Tay loris permission will read it to the congregation tho the affidavit was then readdy read by elder eider emith smith but as he intends shortly to publish it in connection with other papers it is for the pie pre p re withheld he then continued i A asi I 1 before eaid eald I 1 felt to read this thia document because of the in sst fit ruction it would afford and for the further objector object of showing that ul although though he ia IS dead ho he yet speak eth for this thia teg testimony of bro clayton will stand for ever though his body into dust and I 1 amand alij and so was the deceased dec eased when living at the defiance of the world to td dispute those statement statements 2 aget they are made from personal knowledge knowledg derived from personal associations with the prophet joseph smith himself rot not with a view to gain notoriety but rather to leave behind him his testimony with regard to this important principle he ife has done so so and aa as he has here stated aa as having come frona from the mouth month of the prophet pre Pra phet thia this doctrine of eternal union of husband and wife and of plural marriage niage Is ii one of the most important doctrines ever revealed to man in IA any apy age of the world without it man would come to a fuli full fall stop without it we never uever me ver ven could bee be exalted x alt alx to associate with and become gods neither could we attain to the power of eternal In increase creme or the blessings pronounced upon abraham lease isaac and jacob the fathers lathers of the faithful therease there Ther eare anre are but a few witnesses irow BOW living jiving in relation to ta the coining conling forth of this revelation rev there nevar never were many that were cintr WIN acquainted with the prophet and his teaching upon this subject I 1 look around me and hild bee eee a number of persons in this assembly wao whole F e heads leads have grown bald and grey in the service of god and who had an acquaintance with our martyred marty red prophet but few if any of thaws them were so closely identified with him in thia this matter a aa brother clayton CI ayton tharo thare are ho however enough wit Vit witnesses nesses to them principles to establish them upon the earth in buch such a manner that they hever hover never cati cad he be forgotten or out for they will live they are destined to live and algo to grow and spread abroad upon the face of the earth to be received and aud accept accepted od and adopted by all the virtuosi virtu oua by all the pure in heart by all who love iove tho the truth and sk seek to serve him and nd keep beep his bis commandments they ire bound to prevail because they i ire are true principles now we are called upon to pay phy our last respects to brother clayton his spirit has taken its flight athas it has hab gone to the father from whence it came as ia Is taught in the book of mormon when the spirit leaves the body it returns says the prophet immediately to god to be assigned to its place either to associate r with the good and the noble nobie ones who have lived in the para iii uise e of god or to be confined in the arhon tonly houge house to await the resurrection of th the e L body from the grave therefore we know that brother olay ton has gone to god gone to receive the partial judgment of the almighty which pertains to the period intervening between the death of the body and sod the resurrection of the tho body or the separation orthe spirit from the body and their uniting together again this judgment is passed upon the spirit alone but there will come a time which will be after the resurrect tion the body and shall be reunited when the final judg mantwill men ment will twill be 16 passe kaise ddn every man this is in accordance with the va vision s of tho the apostle Joh johnthon John atho athe tho reve beve lator later gand band and I 1 saw the dead small and great stand before god and the books were opened and another book was waa opened which is the book of life and the dead were judged out of those things which derew were written ritten in the books according to their works and the sea gave up the dead which were ih th it and death and hell were cast casi into the lake of fire that is the second death and whosoever wab waa not found written in the book of life was cast cost into the lake of fire s that ia Is the final ninal judgment which w wj j will all receive after we have hafe performed this our earthly mission the fahlor savior did not finish his work when he expired on the cross when he be cried out atia Is finished ile he in using those words had bad no reference to his great mission to the earth but merely merily to the agonies which he suffered the christian world I 1 know bay say he alluded to the great work of redemption this however la Is a great mistake and Is indicative of we the extent ol 01 their knowledg elof the plan of life and salv salvation atlon I 1 say be he referred i merely to the agonies of death and I 1 the sun suu eringa he felt for the wick wiek edness of men who would go so far as to crucify their redeemer Be deemer it was this feeling and this alone alono that prompted him to cry dry out in the agony of hia his soul ait cit it ia is finished ss ys 11 aul ani then he expired fiut fiat at his work was not completed kwAsin ft wag was in tact fact olly begun if he had stopped here hero If istead instead of hla hia being tho the of th tiia ew orld he as well as all mankind would have perished irredeemably never to have come forth out of the grave forit forli tor for it was designed from the beginning that he fie should be the first fruits of them that slept it was part of the great plan that hel he should burst the bands of death and gain the victory over the grave if therefore his mission had bad ceased when he gave up the ghost the world would have slumbered in the duat dust in interminable death never to have risen to live again it was but a small part of the mission of the havior savior that was wag performed when he suffered death it was indeed the lesser part the greater had yet to be done it was in hig his resurrection from the tomb in his bis coming forth from deat death hunto unto life in uniting again the spirit and the body that we might beco become dle die a living soul and when this was done then he was waa prepared to return to the father and all mig this was in strict accordance with the great plan of salvation for even christ himself though without sin wies was required to observe the outward ordinance of baptism in order 0 to fulfill fulfil all righteousness so 80 af ailor aitor lor ler his hia resurrection from the dead he could return to the Father there to receive the welcome plaudit well done you have done your work you have accomplished your ml mission ealon you have brou wrought h t out salvation for all the children childr ti of adam you have redeemed all men from the grave and through their obedience to the ordinances of the gospel which you have established they pan can also alao be redeemed from the spiritual death again to ba be brought back into our presence to partake of glory exaltation and eternal life with us and so it will be when we come forth out of the grav ewhen the trump shall woun boun sound bound I 1 and these our bodies shall rise and our spirits shall enter into them again and they bhail shall become a living jiving soul no more to be dissolved or separated but ton t to become ble immortal eter nali then we shall stand before the bar of god to be judged bo so says the bible so says the book of mormon and so say eay the revelations which have come direct to us through the prophet joseph smith and then those that have not mot been subject and obedient to the celestial law will not be quickened by the celestial glory and those that have not been subject and obedient t to 0 the terrestrial law will not be quickened by the terrestrial glory and those that have not been sub leet feet and obedient to the jaw law will not be quickened by a glory but they will have st kingdom without glory while the sons of perdition men who had bad once been in possession of the light and the truth but who turned away from it and deny the lord putting him to an open shame as did the jews when they crucified him and said let let lot his blood be upon us and upon our ch children adre mn men who consent against I 1 light I 1 gh ta and N knowledge to the shedding of in docent bloods blood it wil will be said unto them depart ye yo cursed I 1 never knew you depart into the second death even banishment from the presence of god fo for ever and ever where the worm dieth die dle th not mot and the fire is not quenched from whence there is no redemption neither in time nor ron in eternity herein is the difference between the second and the first death deaths herein man became spiritually dead for from the first death he may be redeemed by the blood of christ through obedience to the tho laws and ordinances of the but from the second there is no redemption af at all we read in the book of doctrine and Co covenants that the devil tempted adam ald aud he partook 0 of the forbidden fruit and transgressed the commandment wherein he became subject to the will of the devil because he yielded unto temptation and because of this transgression gres sion he hp became E ritually spiritually pi dead which is the first death even that same death which is the last death which is spiritual which shall ba be pronounced upon the wicked when I 1 shall bay cay depart ye curs cura ew edill book of doo doc and cov gov p but who will receive such punishment ish ment only those that deserve it those that commit the unbar donable donabie bin sin then there thare ia the banishment of the transgressor tram greasor not the sons SODS of perdition into the prison house a place of punishment with no exaltation no In increase crease creaso no dominion no power whose inhabitants after their redemption may become servants of them thein that have obeyed the laws of god and kept the faith falth that will be the punishment ashment of sueh such as reject theand the truth and such as abide not in the faith but bin ein not unto tinto death but as touching the terrestrial kingdom as the stars differ from each other in lustre so those who enter into the kingdom differ in glory well now how howls Is it with bro clayton he was not riot without faults in the flesh rat bat what were they were they such as partook of a deadly cha tei tel did he ever deny the lord did he ever deny the prophet josephs jpseph or did he deny the truth or prove unfaithful to hs goven covenants ants or to his brethren no neveil ne verl veil mcanin I 1 can in all truthfulness before god and man bear that tea testimony of olour our departed brother brothers for I 1 have known him from my youth yet he was waa not without his fallings failings but enthey th were of that nature that injured nobody perhaps except himself and his own family but bat notwithstanding his unflinching integrity and his hia long iong life of fidelity and usefulness let me say to you that for his faults however trivial 41 or important he must answer but he will be able to pay his hid debts and to answer for his hia failings fallings and he will come forth and all that has hag been pronounced upon hta hia head by joseph joeeph smith and by the apostles will be confirmed upon him through all nil eternity and there jo ja no power on the earth or la in hell bell that can deprive aim him ju m of them for aa as it la ii bald said and indeed I 1 needa anaed not refer reter you to the revel refel revelation atlon on celestial marriage mar but will w iii quote from the words 0 of f christ as given in the new testament wherefore isay ibay unto you all manner of bin sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men but the blasphemy |
