be ve nee necessary essary to an acknowledged membership in the body of 0 f Congregation congregationalism allem the evident intention of the movement was the exclusion of some bome BO me churches and preachers from fellowship now galling sailing under colors but the doctrines and principles of those who claim to belong to this denomination are rather difficult of arrangement indeed they are impossible of into a creed because many of them are discordant and the genius of congregational church government is almost inconsistent with the formation of a set sebb form of falth faith it gives the utmost latitude to each local body of worship worshippers wor shippers pem pea so far is this extended that in so bome some me parts of the world congregationalists i are popularly known as independents pen pan dents s I 1 but the need of a creed for the times is called for by the changes that have taken place in the views of both preachers and people since the promulgation of the dogmas laid down in the westminster catechis mand the rejection by most of them of the extreme views enunciated by calrin and his disciples the creeds of men need continual change they are aie full of errors aud and time exposes them the simple truth of god stands untouched by the force of lof time and needs needa no reconstruction the christian union of the lith lust reprint reprints i a profession of holy comforter who is as present in the church to regenerate and the soul with the whole church we confess the common sinfulness and ruin of our raees races race and acknowledge that it ia is only through the work accomplished by the lifland life and expiatory death of christ that believers in nim him before god receive the remission of bine sine and through the presence and grace of the holy comforter are delivered from the power of bin ein and perfected in holiness we bellove also aiso in the organized and visible church in the ministry of the word in the sacraments of baptism and the lords in the resurrection of the body and in the final judgment the issues of which are eternal life and everlasting punishment 11 we receive these truths on the testimony of god lod given through prophets and apostles and in we thie life the miracles the death the resurrection of his son eon our divine redeemer a testimony preserved for the church in the scriptures Scrip turee turey ir of the
