rapidly in education the reports showed that there are comparatively ively very few poor people in this stake and their necessities are supplied by the donations of the saints these reports and the statistical reports read by eider elder joseph hall and the sabbath school reports read by ejupi richard 4 ballantyne lan tyne were bome some of the most cheering which were ever presented at any conference held in this stake of zion jn in the aft afternoon ernson elder brigham young addressed the meeting on I 1 the importance of every pe person in church magni magnifying ryGg tyng his call ar c ing and discharging this ual duties and not leave naive too much to be bedone done by the presidents and bishops he knew some somo men who at one time held good standing and position in thia this church who enjoyed much of the spirit of god and many good gifts and could bear a faithful testimony to the truth of this work but they had neglected their duties got into the dark and now occupied slippery ground they hardly knew now whether this work was of god or not he referred to the persecutions and opposition brought to bear against this people and the kingdom of god all of which bad had been in id vain tain to proven prevent t the thie onward on viard progress pro gress gresa of the great greit latter day work the kingdom wiil will triumph and the saints will triumph with it il apostle C C bich rich addressed the meeting for many years past the principles piea plea of the gospel had been uppermost on his mind the first thing thi ngin bi the morning and the last thing at night he felt the tho importance and need of instruction and believed we all did the lat ter day saints need to be lie saved daily do what is right today to day this is salvation it ak is being saved now this pian plan of salvation fion commenced i with us when we first embraced the gospel remission sion slon of sins was offered ua us by complying with certain conditions all other blessings come to ua us in the same manner elder Bich rich gave much mom more instruction and fatherly counsel coun sei on a variety of subjects all of which hereof were of ih interest treet creet to the saints and which were listened to attentively and appreciated by the audience on sunday morning the tabernacle was filled to its utmost capacity in addition to those on the stand anthe on the previous day were franklin D richards ric Bic hards and joseph F smith of the council of the twelve president F M lyman of the tooele thoele stake patriarch john smith elders 0 W penrose of the deseret NEWS george F gibbs reporter for the church junius F wells of the territorial central board of the young mens mutual improvement association and abd ator feor stiv s ercia ea prest Preat JF M lyman said he had bad often thought of ogden city and wondered if it would be the fate of the people here to suffer as much from the outside element aa as the saints in the tooele thoele stake have suffered from this source and to be brought under gentile rule he did not believe the nord lord ever designed to bring us under the rule of our enemies of those who wha are not satisfied with us the people of tooele thoele county had been cheated out of their political franchs franchise o their county treasury had been depleted and their county orders while under ethl mormon ormon rule were worth a hundred cents on the dollar were now only worth about 25 cents on the dollar the latter day saints in this stake hold bold the balance of political power will they continue to retain aln ain this power or will they allow this advant advantage ake to pass into the tho hands of their en enemies emles and have to suffer in as the people of tooele thoele had suffered he trusted the saints in ogden would be wise and united and would use the franchise to elect 1 cily city and county govern ments meats who will build wild up and A nd protect the interests of the people with whom they are identified elder G Q W penrose was the next speaker he had bad reflected much on the condition of this city and county and he saw two reasons why they might lose the balance a n ce of political power now in their theli b unless they madea made a change one was the apathy and carelessness of many the other a lack of union and conil confidence dence he showed that the main object of gathering to these vales tales was to learn the will of god and then do it that the elective franchise was not given as a mere honor or ornament to either eem but to use for mutual benefit and it implied duties to be performed one cause of disunion was hypocrisy another promice break ing lie he did not believe in contention for toi it came from beneath but it was waa necessary emarY that every man should be franke frank and outspoken enand enaud and aud not nob pretend union with a brother or leader to his face and then disagree with ani and speak evil of him when his back was turned the idea ought to be discarded that a man was wicked because boded ho did not see as wo we do otonce at ht once capacities to grasp ideas varied frank prank free speech ought to be encouraged the head and the foot should be in id harmony and nud union should bo be not ij a banding together by rules but an essential coherence the leaders and the tha people ought a mutual understanding and aud then adt act a a one the minority yielding to the majority for union and power and we mua muse observe and keep pur our agree agreements mints experience would prove drove the truth of ot christs christy saying i he liffe that is not for m me e is li against me etc and if we wod would id be one id fit all bl thIn gir gif we would not only retain the balance of power here hero but aro eio lungi that rule now in the ibe the hands of the wicked would pass into the hands of the merya servants ats of the living god tn in the afternoon after singing and prayer the sacrament was administered eider elder penrose then presented the set KOt lezU charities of church and ana all the au ah xh caldes of this onis stake who were sustained by a mos mob thearty earty and unanimous vote of the immense congregation which filled every part of the Taber tabernacle nacle naele the aisles and vestry included elder joseph F smith then addressed the conference in 4 most lost powerful discourse upon the political and religious situa situation and duties of i the latter da day saints he showe showed d the magnanimity i liberality era lity and regard for the rights of the great majority of the people exhibited by the government in its selection of officers for this thia territory bestowing every place within its gift upon representatives of one tenth of the population and entirely ignoring the nine tenths and further in irr choosing men for these places who were the avowed ene enemies niles of this great majo lity he argued from this the policy of latter day sain bain saints LQ hold bold folding ing the balance of local political power handing over a portion of or nf reely and liberally to this same class who were seeking our overthrow and how eminently wise sensible and politic such a course would be he would have all the power wielded by the latter day maints saints exercised for the protection of every person whether he wor shipped jeh 0 yah or a yellow dog and for securing coall to all ali people their rights irrespective of cre ere creed creador edor or doll pol s eaf dud dua wa wd no need 10 lor r handing over to others the power powe r god had entrusted to us there was no necessity for opposition among the latter day saints but there was a necessity ana and commandment man dment that they should be one it is 19 impossible in this brief space to give even a synopsis of the speakers discourse it was reported and will shortly be published it was wag listened to with intense in terest arld arid made a remal remarkable kable kabie impression erest Prest E FD J richards then them announced thel the conference
