from shatter station nev moroni moreal roni wight of this city was instantly killed on friday february by i having his neck broken mr wight was taking care of his sheep and it 11 is custor customary nary tor for flock masters to use tb the e front part of the running gears ol of their sheep camp wagons to fetch supplies and to do any I 1 running about necessary mr wight had bad done this on thursday propping the front end of his camp be box so so that it would stand when he was placing tile the wheels back it was necessary for him to get under tho the box to adjust tile the reach pole pola and while doing this thru some means or other the i props broke from under the bo box X and a nd it fell the edge pinning him to the sway bar of the wagon breaking his neck and killing him instantly the th 0 boy who was ws with him could not lif lift t the tha b box 0 K so got onto a horse and rode 10 miles tor for help which was gladly given mr body was released from th the a death trap and laid out on the grou ground rid word was sent tor for a conveyance ve and the coroners permission obtained to bring the body to shatter station A message was sent to D P burt ot of this city who in company t with lewis wight left tor for tile the scene of the accident friday evening an inquest was held and the body was brought home arriving sunday afternoon continued on page tour four impressions continued from first page part of the cily cita in which salt lake depot Is situated is decidedly uninviting the rain continued to pour and a cold wind was blowing wo we felt rather subdued in spirit but we boarded a car and went up town and secured a good arn room near the center of tile ilia cit alti the downpour kept on all day clay but we were anxious to see what there was vas so we went in ill tile sight seeing car in the after afternoon noo n I 1 guess every city of any size eize now liow has its sight eight seeing car ca and I 1 want to say to prospective tourists that thai they are worth while you will be able t to 0 see and understand anew city better in three or four hours hour s on one of these cars than you could possibly jo do inas in as many lays days it if left to your own devices for seeing things and learning what you saw this loute covers 30 miles aul occupies three hours but of it is confined to the public highways so fo we with four others hired a big cleveland automobile bourl touring ng car and visited parts of the city and the suburbs not accessible to the street car for instance private parks and residences this was far e ar and away the most pleasant trip we wa had in los angeles the rain raia had sloped the sun run shone bright and warm ournia ourma thine chine was a good one and ana our driver Chaffe claffey Cb affey nl an expert the trip trio to catalina Island sis an interesting feature without which a visit to los angeles would be almost t like visiting salt lake without seeing the temple but the pleasure is variable in ili quality it the point of 0 depends entirely upon view we might dispose of the matter by s lying that its a treat to those who escape sickness the ride is a treat and to the f fishes tile the rest are a treat A boy about 14 was quite sick going over tile the steward sat down by him and sa said I 1 d i you wont vont want to go back with us wilk you yes tes ill go back the little fellow said but digs as a lead dead moral certainty ill never conic come over again A i young man a tourist front from the rest east was vas deathly sick both going over and coming back the consumed 2 hours time each way addlie and he was getting quite concerned about dusk as the doat boat was nearing san pe pedro dro a kindly hearted man looked in at him and sat said my bly friend the ae wa be quieter and you 11 it II feel better when the moon comes up good lord he groaned has that got to come up to I 1 was lucky enough to escape seasickness but rhoda got hers she had every experience and impression that th the trip called for she enjoyed the trip thoroughly lio however wever for all that there are are a good many interesting things at catalina among them according to my mind belil being the view of the submarine sub sula marine gardens as obtained from the glass bottomed boats an attempt todo to do these gardens even scant justice would overtax my descriptive powers so I 1 wont try but I 1 do advise my mv friends who may visit these islands to take this trip even it if they do nothing else I 1 there is in los angeles what is called the balloon route excursion co aria and I 1 must say in justice to them that they give the tourist the full worth of ills his money for instance we took a trip on the electric cars covering 70 miles and occupying about eight eigild hours on the trip we visited the soldiers home in sawtelle santa monica ocean view venice del rey and redonda we rode along the beach for 28 miles had 20 minutes at santa monica an hour at del rey an hour and a quarter at redonda and two hours arid a halt half at venice the trip is well worth the time and money this same sama company provides other and longer trips all of tourists say are models from every standpoint now that will just about suffice for los Lo angel es gindher ind her ill have to 0 uit admit that that as ablo lo 10 los angeles itself I 1 was a little disappointed perhaps it if I 1 seen saen san francisco in its glory it would have been di erent b but ut certainly los angeles has nothing that thai san francisco have on a larger and more magnificent scale its business houses bouses in ill no way compare and its most imposing residences are insignificant as compared with the palaces that once graced nob hill los angeles Is twenty miles from the ocean and the beaches while san francisco has the pacific right in the back yard the nearest ocean harbor to los angeles Is san pedro twenty five miles allies distant the bay side of san francisco to tor a distance of three miles mile 5 is a solid wharf they talk a good deal in los angeles angelas ct CC usurping san Francis cos glory as a gate to the pacific but all that appears to me as mere sentimentality the northern city has every natural advantage that one can think of ani and will without the shadow of a doubt maintain its supremacy NORMAN LEE |
