Show t it The Salt Lake Tribune. Sunday, October l. tr? Top Receivers Receivers Don Hurt and Al Marshall were the chief offenders Saturday as the Broncos took advantage of a young and green Weber defensive secondary. Fearing that they might be burned on the long pass, the Wildcats almost conceded the short aerials to Hutt and Marshall. This appeared to be sound strategy on the surface because Hutt and Marshall were first and third respectively in Big Sky pass receiving last year. But this reasoning backfired as this twosome turned short passes into long gains and when the opportunity for big gainer presented itself neither Hutt nor Marshall passed it up The Weber secondary sprinkled with sophomores and r men, was almost helpless. Hutt and Marshall each caught a pair of touchdown passes and this duo truthfully made mince meat of the Cats. , but m Big Weber state fell to while Boise State, play seeing its first conference action of the season, surged to a mark. 1 The Broncos scored three touchdowns in the second half after taking a huge lead at the half. Oddly enough both Weber touchdowns came via the pass. The Wildcat offense was guilty of fumbleitus all evening and little scatback Al Butler was the only Cat to make an impressive showing. Halftime Lead Boise State, relying almost exclusively on the passing game in the first half, took a intermission lead. 28-1- 0 Hutt and Marshall toyed Weber secondary and in doing so brought the overflow crowd to its feet. with an inexperienced Wildcat Pass The Wildcats opened the scoring with a Bronco weapon. Just moments into the game, Weber was backed up on its own three-yar- d line. The thinkthat the was Cats would ing go to their successful running game. But lo and behold quarterback Charlie Grayson came out passing and connected with Rick Bojak on a mammoth pass play. It was Bojaks second touchdown reception in two games. Ross Torgerson added the PAT and Weber led, Then the Broncos, looking very much like the Broncos of Denver, got down to business and before you could say wishbone, Boise had a 7 lead. 21-- touchdown pass with seconds left m the first stanza Weber took the kickoff and finally coordinated the wishbone to move downfield. A! Butlers scamper and a burst by Phil Eland pushed the Wildcats to the Boise 31) but two plays later Weber fumbled and Boise's John Walker recovered. After Walker's fumble recovery Marshall scored on a pass play or so he thought. The touchdown was nullified because of a holding penalty and instead of being two touchdowns down, the Wildcats still trailed nine-yar- d But not for long.
