Show Functional Rooms and Intimacy Mark the Decor in This Home By Bernie Moss Home Furnishings Editor Lovell Privacy was a prerequisite when Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Lovell chose the design they wanted for their new home in Salt Lake City. Their previous home was very contemporary, very open, with glass all over the place. This home Is more intimate,' Mrs. Lovell said. We call it Tudor English. Each room functions the way it was intended to function. The living room is a living room and the dining room is a dining room, said Lee Last, interior designer who worked with Mrs. Lovell for the feeling of country English they wanted the house to project. The living and dining rooms share the fireplace. Mr. 'w- - found an old truss beam and used it for the fireplace mantel in both rooms. Wide strap iron was used vertically on the beam for trim. The fireplace is stucco .and used brick. Stucco has been used as a building material for centuries and emphasizes the country English mood very well. In keeping with this impression is the beamed look around the top of the white walls. The beams are used flat against the wall and as a cornice at the window. Cotton velvet draperies are supported in soft folds from the cornice by railheads, indicative of the Elizabethan period. Chain are polished brass. White sheers hang under the cornice. A wood cornice is used again in the entryway. Lights were installed in the cornice tvamwwiiipKntM Atv .f.y :V . ; to open up the narrow hallway. Heavy oak doors are used at the entry and at the end of the hall. A printed grass cloth of Jacobean damask is used on walls in the hall and entry and relate to the grass cloth in the living room. Since the carpet in any home wears out faster in halls than elsewhere, a heavy in lemon-lim- e textured is inserted into a recess in trie floor of the hall of the Lovell home. It can be taken up and replaced when worn. Thresholds and outside perimeter is oyster tile. In addition to the fire- the living room and linen closet In the A' i dining room are back to back. Together they make the width of the fireplace. A cotton velvet with a huge rose beauty pattern, In varying shades of blue with an accent of brewn, covers two lounge chairs in the living room and again on dining room chairs. We started with that pattern and color scheme and decorated around it, Miss Last said. Weve thrown a spanner into the works by using all French impressionistic paintings. The bathroom off this bedroom continues the red and black Spanish color theme. The shower is one whole unit that had to be brought in before walls could be built. A mansard ceiling in the master bedroom on an upper level creates a different and unusual touch in the home. The open beam effect Is repeated wlh beams flat against the ceiling. Here again we wanted something indicative of the Jacobean period, Mss Last The chandeliers, drapery treatment, printed velvet used as upholstery in both rooms, and, of course, the color scheme, all tie the rooms together. bookcase Section A One bedroom on the main floor is designed in a very heavy, masculine mood. It was done for the Lovells sen who is now gone, Miss Last said. Its definitely a Spanish room. Cork wallpaper covers walls. In other words weva used every color of the rainbow. This tub also had to be brought in before walls could be put up. And there are no fabric. A chaise longue in the bedroom is upholstered in green velvet. Its the kind of velvet that will become more beautiful with age, Miss Last said, As its crushed, it acquires creases in it in just the right places. A w o m a ns bathroom needs just the right kind of light for applying makeup, Miss Last added. This is 'hat weve tried to do with an overhead box light. Practically every surface is patterned in the family room. The shag carpet is tweed, the wall covering is a green and gether and have it come off well. One whole wall Is cedar closet in the family room and we wanted these doors to disappear so we wrapped them in the wall covering. However, we wanted doors flanking the fireplace to look like doors. So we applied a medieval looking hardware on with chain them complete guards and hooks. the Mr. Lovell designed black metal fireplace hood with flanges for the family room. Each piece of hardware In the home was selected individually but to coordinate with each other. Natural landscaping around the Lovell home includes a gold printed cork and draperies are a heavy striped upholstery fabric similar to a Navajo blanket.
