The new report measures what young Americans in age groups 9, 13 and 17' and young adults between the ages 2fi ami 35, know about science. i'he report also covers ihe factors of color, level of parental education and size and type of community. Previous assessment reports have dealt with students in geographical areas and have considered the sex of the assessment participant and the general size of their communities. This report, seventh in a series, deals with specific size and types of community. to demonstrate the relationship of parental education to the achievements of children. The results show blacks performed 12 to 16 percent below the national average of all four age levels assessed. Some Over Average On the whole, blacks performed best on those science exercises most dependent and upon daily experience common knowledge and worst on those, involving the more abstract aspects, ECS officials said.
