The government has said it will permit only a 2.5 percent increase in prices for the economy as a whole. Thats about half as much as the auto companies intended to raise 1972 model prices. Ford Motor Co., Chrysler and American Motors Corp. already have announced their intention to seek price boosts under Presit jnt Nixons Phase II economic recovery program. Chrysler and AMC made their announcements Friday, joining Ford, which declared its intent Thursday. Only General Motors Corp., the biggest of the car makers made no announcement, but it was expected to do so. AMC, the smallest of the Big Four automakers, said it would promptly seek approval for an increase. Ford and Chrysler said they w uld seek approval as soon as they can determine what the price commission will allow. they would They indicated justify the increases under that commission guidelines permit higher prices to recover additional production costs.
