The hot sun is putting t! e It's Easv to Tell Summer's Gome, w Arclierv Deer Season Sneaks Up down It's always easy to tell when summer has sneaked past, and fall is waiting around the corner in Utah. You can tell because you look up one day and that its the middle of August and archery deer hunting is just around the corner. Anyone who has ever been in the mountains during the late part of August knows that snow' isnt uncommon, and rain is almost a certainty. There have been years when its almost been nice to get back down to the valley to thaw out and dry out. ( a i c.h fi-- h the water. Cae Anyway, for the 15,000 or so archers who will take to the trees for the deer hunt beginning Aug. 2S, this is the time of year for practice, practice, practice. Without it theres little chance for a successful hunt, except perhaps for tue real'" lucky ones. I use to hunt with a fella who had a theory that practice was for the birds. Hed never pull a bow until he was actually huntin,T and saw his first deer. His theory was that th first few shots of the season always went straight, and after that you had to really work to get any better. Well, he never got his deer, but he did have a lot of fun hunting. Come to think about it, that first shot always does seem to hit the mark. Unless, of course, its aimed at a doer! Bowhunters can get some great practice Saturday and Sunday at the Treasure Mountain Shoot at ark City. Actual hunting conditions, with targets that look like deer. And the average bloke .vho doesnt spend all year practicing has a chance to win, since the shooting is on a handicap basis. Strawberry River, I drove back to the same spot on the reservoir. Almost Dark It was almost dark and the pinkish - orange reflection of the evening sky was tinting the water. Tiny waves were kicking into the shore, and fish were jumping near shore. Cycle Races To Draw Huge Field Here n There ?o the 1972 season ortens on Aug. 19 . . . You missed a great shoot, said Ttoosevclts Dr. Gary White, who has black powder in his blood. He was talking about the Green River Rendezvous which drew muzzloload-ih- g shooters to fbp Ur.tah Basin last weekend. Actually it was awfully hot, but there were some great scores. The winner of the flintlock rifle shoot from crossed sticks shot a perfect 50 with two or three xs center hits), he said. Ive never heard of it lief ore. Jh Anyone who doesnt know about flintlocks Airht not appreciate the difficulty of that feat. The ljfles are fired by a piece of flint striking a steel plate, which produces sparks, which in turn ignites a priming charge of black powder, which ignites the main load. As you might suspect, theres often a noticeable delay between pulling the trigger and the gun firing. In that instant its easy to puli the gun off target. So a perfect score is something to brag about . . . Can anyone tell me what an abandoned Salt Lake City Bus Lines bus is doing parked about 10 miles below Starvation Reservoir along side a dirt road that follows the Strawberry River? Its been I partially stripped, and then just left . . . wonder if the old company ever had a missing bus they couldnt account for . . . Remember during the hullabalo about the new Recreational Vehicle Act last winter, one of the main points argued by proponents was that it would prevent closing of land to recreation vehicles. Hasn't worked too well, has it. Now comes the disconcerting news that the Forest Sendee is going to close huge chunks of the Wasatch and Uintah National Forests to recreation vehicles except snowmobiles. The three I .rger rivers in northern Utah, tire Weber, Logan and Provo, ate all in excellent shape now. All have been stocked, and all are producing fish. Flies have been fairly effective on all three, with bait also catching fish with regularity. Most of the lakes are slow during the day, except when a knowledgeable angler gets his bait or Jure to just the right depth. That right depth could be mighty deep in some of the media race.
