Show A MEMORIAL TO CONGRESS A joil JOINT r committee of the council and house of representatives has been appointed to braf draft t a M memorial to con gecas asking for the appointment of a congress congressional ional tonal committee to inquire into the tiie affairs ef this territory so that any action taken by congress in relation to utah may be bet based upon correct information we have heard the questions asked what need is there for another commission Is not the L taa tau commission composed of gentlemen qualified f for or the task and it so why ask for another these queries arise from lack of understanding the utah commission el created by the edmunds act nas certain nied and definite powers I 1 lne ine lle lie exercise of any authority beyond me tae limits denied denned in that act would oe be unlawful and there therefore foe void among those powers investigation imo into tiie tile charges that have be been made against the majority of the people here is not enumerated that commission is not an investigating committee such as is contemplated in the action ot of the legislature the necessity for a committee of this kind is plainly seen in all the bins bina anil all the speeches made in the senate ai or house ot ol representatives of ane L I 1 cited states against the people called 1 mor alor mons 11 tiie tile bills and the olus elus manifest gross ignorance of tnt tau fax ts and muen misunderstanding ti nemih ah nias lias been produced by laise faise information it is desirable mat the true condition ol 01 ulah utah affairs her people ia laws v s customs condition aud ani prospects should be known to that body emch has undertaken to ehaet laws fr f r ner regulation this has always been ane wish of the majority of her citizens but the small minority who have persistently endeavored to misrepresent the facts have always been opposed to such an investigation and the reason for that opposition is and has lueen that it is n not ot the truth which aney want to be established and light would be unfavorable to their schemes of darkness and dishonesty federal officials have frequently aided in the tile work of misrepresentation through which the passage of inimical laws has as been secured their statements m e n lisath often diametrically opposed d to t the h e truth have been received as 1 iy ay s because of their official position aa aai without hearing the other side inclusions clu have been jumped at re resulting suiting in legislation which has bee been injurious to the territory and has not effected the object which its chief advocates had in view it was false information received without scrutiny or hearing anything from the defence th that at prompted e the so called utah war in which millions of public money was spent in a fiasco flasco that would have been d disgraceful isi laceful in a commonwealth and I 1 in a great nation was as arimina criminal I 1 as it was ridiculous A committee of invest investigation atlon sent here before the army was ordered ordered out instead of af afterwards ter wards would have saved the country millions of treasure and f from rom a false step that any would have hesitated to take a rash and inexcusable movement without inquiry and as the event p proved roved without cause the report of governor INI murray urray to the secretary of the interior and the governors message to the legislative assembly both official documents contain not only gross misrepresentations of fact but absolute and positive ive lse untruths un truths it is not to be wondered at that such official statements statement are received at the seat of government as veritable relations of utah affairs and considering the prejudice which exists against those who take pains to refute them that they should pass must r without much question or aftem attempt p t to exam examine ine lne evidence to the contrary under these circumstances an impartial committee of inquiry if it oe possible to obtain such a body is urgently demanded and no one can reasonably object but the rascals atio lie and deceive public men in regard to utah and the mormons cormons Mor mons investigation is the last th thing in that they desire their success depends upon the general disposition to gulp down without examination every monstrous falsehood and antl cunning perversion which is f fulminated against the I 1 I 1 mormon people and they want no committee cittee to investigate invests in vesti ate and no hesitation about depriving a whole community of peaceable and unoffending citizens of all the natural and acquired rights that belong to the citizens of a rree tree republic we hope the memorial will be prepared pare dand and duly forwarded and presented i to congress and we think all ajust just and sensible people will join in the request that nothing be done towards extreme measures such as have been proposed in congress until full and reliable information has been 1 obtained as to the exact status of the people and their affairs whose political ristene e is now placed in jeopardy |
