Show MORE diore ANTI tt 11 MORMON nion CION RUBBISH THE following appeared in the salt lake tribune of this morning being beim part of an anonymous correspondence correspond enc ene from montana Mont a na it Is another of the class of tales mes by the circulation of which that paper seeks to create prejudice I 1 iudice judice against the mormons cormons Mor mons I 1 throughout the country and bychich by which it has been the indirect means of causin causing I 1 such scenes as the tennessee massacre ten days ago the tribune published a sermon preached in the bowery in salt lake september 1856 1836 in which the doctrine of blood atonement was set forth in strong langma language gc it maybe interesting to know when this doctrine was first attempted to bo be put ili in practice I 1 today to day listened to the recital of incidents which point to the time as told by a truthful gentleman now fifty years e ars old lie he was raised I 1 near the T hill ill lii of cumorah and joe I 1 smith was a frequent visitor r at the residence of his erand arand grandfather father whom we will call P F sr and designate the hero of our story as P F jr at that time 1831 or 12 I 1 sr possessed lands and property valued at or and this appears to have been an object of covetousness on the part of the tile founder of mormonism the prophet joe visited the mansion frequently talked elibay prayed 0 with ith the old gentleman and lady a and had persuaded them to sell their property and ather wather with the saints ejr JJr tile the parent of I 1 our informant did n ut nt t like this and i going to tile the house one day found the i prophet praying with orders ed cd itjin to leave and told hlin illin if lie lle ever eve r I 1 entered the house again ho he would UM g mercifully chastise hill him with a horsewhip soon after tills ajr ejr F jr was engaged to work in the neld held when he saw smith riding to the house dropping his work ho he hastened to the barn darn barn properly armed himself with a whip and reaching deachin the house by a circuitous route so as not to be seen he entered the room just in time th e to find smith pouring out supply in behalf of the aged pair whom he was trying to ensnare taking him by the tiie hair he lifted him up and carried into execution his promise to whip him unmercifully having accomplished the work he ordered the seer to retire and forever to remain away which he did A short time after this F jr was engaged in work ja in the neld field when a in man a u in disguise approached him and snapped a gun at him in such a position had it went off he would have killed him being active and powerful he wrenched the gun from the hands of the would be assassin and gave him such a drubbing that the man begged for merc mere mercy Y and became so penitent as to tell him why he had attempted to take the life of a man who had never wronged him smith had called upon him ofie one of his followers to do what he dared not do and this man being a ready tool wa was the first to attempt to put in practice tile the decree of blood atonement this incident saved TH a worthy family faintly from going and made their descendants detest that church itis it is not unil ely that some unsophisticated people may believe this silly apt inal rual malicious lelous stor story notwithstanding its utter absurdity and untruthfulness joseph smith removed from manchester ontario county N linthe YIn Y in the vicinity of NN which the hill cumorah is situated in ia december Is 1827 nearly three years before tle church was organized and went to harmony pennsylvania in 1829 lie he removed if from rom the latter place to senecca county N Y where the church was organized on the oth of april 1830 with six members in 1831 MI joseph smith moved to ohio the first gathering place being at kirtland rin fin in that state during 1832 1833 the residence of joseph smith was at hiram cortage county ohio and he be was in that state durin during that year with the exception of v visits t paid aid ald by by him to independence missouri N on rl alt was said in rela reia relation tion fion to the former day saints that all manner of evil was spoken against them but as objects against whom the most relentless and diabolical has been hurled wo vye believe the lat ter day saints stand at the head of the heap so far as history affords information |
