tho the different sections of the tho exposition the american will naturally compare the exhibits of his own country with those ot at other coxin countries tries and in spite of lils his prejudices in favor of homei home he will after long inspection continued from day to day be able to form a general idea and tell in a general way what we have gained or lost by entering the lists of this grand art artistic istia and industrial tournament in the first place our government appropriated a large portion of which had as a matter of course to be expended for sinecure salaries for commissioners figure heads in no way necessary emmy to the legitimate elid end of our appearing here this however is a question to be considered consia consla ered at home I 1 merely merell mention it en pos passant sant because I 1 have observed that the commissioners sio ners the commissioner in chief except ea have bave little or nothing to do bless biess their patriotic souls but to see sea europe at the expense of the purse proud taxpayer at home by our appearance at this exhibition I X doubt if we have made any improvement in the unsympathetic eyes of the world since we astonished and alarmed the manufacturers of christendom and heathendom by the extent of if our natural resource resources a i and productive ability in 1876 I 1 do not doubt that the average european who knows as little about us as we know about australia will after comparing our dur display here hete with the displays of 0 f other countries look upon us very much as we did upon mexico or the ars ae gentino gentine n tine tino republic nt the centennial exhibition of course the estimate will wiil bet bei erroneous made from superficial inspection but how many in ill ten thousand make more than a I 1 superficial inspection ot of anything the visitor who bad never known II 11 guy quy anything thing of the until he entered our section in the Champ de do mars would gather the impression sion that the united states was an immense country for the production of false teeth drugs waltham watches pianos planes photographs carriages axes door locks sewing machines and school books he would look in vain in the fine art department to find a single picture that suggests like the works of european artists anything that ia Is legendary or typical of national life habits manners and native scenery for our artists who have pictures herey here have studied and copied abroad have contented themselves with w th cleverly and imitating european masters instead of drinking at the fount of nature and becoming masters themselves we have through a new vork york york nirma firma nirm firm a fine display of carriages buggies sul bul sulkies kles klep etc they are all lighter and more elegant but less durable than the french or english carriages and the prices asked for them are at least 25 per cent higher than is asked for the same article in europe the watch co at waltham massachusetts and tiffany co of new now york have both excellent exhibits they have made the best beat of impressions abroad and will no doubt in the end reap a harvest for themselves from the seed bown aown here but since they represent special and limited industries it is questionable whether their prosperity is a matter for national con eon congratulation in the department part ment of laborsaving labor saving machinery and especially in the machinery of agriculture we will I 1 think hold our own we cannot gain anything in this department for the superiority of our agricultural implements is universally conceded the american mowers reap ers erb e r s threshers thre etc have for years been sold through agencies in the large european cities many of them are in operation in france belgium germany germans Ger mads maDy and russia T thein their heir hein superior strength lightness simplicity yand sand and efficiency has placed them almost be toul competition it is well however that our manufacturers rs have made the fine display by far the best in the american section that they have made here for the manufacturers of other ocher countries are not asleep and it is 18 as important to maintain as to gain a reputation the field trial of mowers and reapers readers will take place in a few days I 1 believe on the of this month mouth more mole than fifty mowers and as many harvesters will compete for medals and it may be predicted with an approach to certainty that the real competition will be between different ame american rican machines and not between those of america and european countries the increasing popularity of our machines abroad is not however the roseate auspicious omen for our pecuniary gain that it would at t first appear to be it means meana that the day is dawning on this continent when the woman and the cow will be no louge harnessed to the cart and plow when larger areas will he be reaped leaped and cheaper bread will be furnished to the millions of europe especially ia a this true in the light of the great changes that have in the last two weeks been made upon the map of europe russia will now have water transportation for the surplus of her fertile plains and asiatic turkey through the stable government guaranteed by england may become a com compete peti tor in the grain market of the world C A S jubilee at american city AMERICAN CITY august ath 1878 theland now being farmed lies on the south side of the sevier river biver tile the canal which is an old bed of the sevier bevier starts from the river in a southerly direction and de scribes a semicircle semi circie circle of several miles diameter and after supplying numerous irrigating ditches empties its waters into the river several miles below the dam or head of the canal the tile soil varies from a sand band and vegetable loam to a heavy clay all of it being more or I 1 less sa impregnated with mineral ie salt and alkali on the untilled and land a heavy growth of greasewood covers the soil and on the tilled land ers milkweed pigweed and are fighting for the victo ryas a general thing with grain in ube ibe minority sadly hiding its modest modes t heads in shame for the shiftlessness shiftless ness nesa or ignorance of the cultivator the cause of this state of things ia Is found in the fact that there is an abundance of water at deseret and as it costs one dollar per acre for it the people with the true instinct ot of the chinaman when buying his boots want to get all they can for their an d they pour on the water in season anu ana an crout drout vr when it needs it and when it dont need it and usually the latter the land laud is very level and the water settles jn in the lowest places which caused causes the mineral to raise and morning finds the grain as effectually cut off as if an army of grasshoppers had visited it A large breadth of land was vas sown last spring and not over one third or at least one half of a crop will be raised in act fact the crops are not nearly as good as those of last seabon season beason residents of Dese men of bf good judgment told me that the best grain rain is that which has had the least east water and those men are the most successful farmers they assert that early ini irrigation gation gatlon stunts the grain and starts the weeds and too much water raises the mineral which causes an almost irreparable injury to the land those that have farmed in a judicious manner are gradually improving their surroundings roun dings and vice versa and hey they unanimously agree that a radical and thorough change in the method of farming must follow or the he district hopelessly ruined for instance a man that is this season farming in a slovenly manner say 40 acres must reduce the area of grain 20 aeres acres cultivate well and carefully and when the weeds on the uncultivated 20 get a good start in the latter part of june or first of july go to with his plow and turn them under then the following season sow to grain and serve the other in the same samo manner thus reducing his water tax tas one half and getting as much oft 0 the 20 acres as he now gets off the 40 Howe howo farmers on the north side and a few on the south side of the river have grown very fine grain giving promise of what can be done with a little admixture of brains with the elbow grease the appearance of the survey as it is called is anything but inviting being an almost interminable stretch of greasewood an occasional sand fand ridge with here ere and there a house completes the exil exit crating landscape the townsite ia is the beat best that could be found in that locality and shows considerable enterprise as they have a tidy school house store etc A small outlay of labor only would soon make deseret a pleasant and inviting place lombardy poplars mul mui berrye rys etc grow r rapidly ap from cuttings let them and other ther kinds replanted be planted on section and 40 acre lines and in a few years yeara the
