Dr. Bisque is associate director of the Earth Science Curriculum Project which is developr course designed ing a primarily for the ninth grade. The proposed textbook, still In the process of revision, will be called "Investigating the Earth, and is divided into four major sections. .A partial description: the sun: A Earth atid sun source of energy; a first look at the planet earth; forces and fields; earth materials; the ' changing earth. circulation of Earth cycles moisture; moisture In the at-- Whether or not his analysis and description are correct, one 9th grader did write that verse after By G K. Report Praises The stresses approach science as inquiry. Laboratory experiments, an integral part of the course, stress the investigative approach. The student is encouraged to think for himself. The Curriculum Report of the National Association of Secondary-School Principals finds much to praise in the new earth science program. Jt does, however, raise these points: - "The early chapter of the text seem to rely in unusual degree upon rather sophisticated mathematics . . . (and) on physical and chemical concepts that students may not yet understand. . . Do we really want our science so pure at the ninth grade level? Curriculum Report calls for an enormous amount of testing before the materials are published commercially, and that is going on right now. The textbook, teachers guide and laboratory manual were prepared during the summer of 1964 by a group of 40 scientists and secondary school teachers, and tested on about 8,000 sty school dents during the 1964-6year. Based on the feedback from that testing, the materials were revised this summer) and will be formally tested at 75 schools in 15 test centers during the 1964-6school year. About 10,000 students will be involved this time. Most of them will be 9th graders, but a few 8th grade and 10th grade classes will be 5 6 included. There will be another revision next summer, before the final commercial publication of the materials in the spring of 1967. Tuesday: Economics for tots.
