Those laiJ off are salaried employes in the middle and lower management echelons. - Its the first major layoff made . the company in by several months. We regret the action," said Richard G. Sailer, Bacchus Works manager. We have attempted to rely on norpial attrition or minor layoffs to reduce the rolls.1 The layoff will bring Bacchus employment to about 3,200, compared to 6,000 during its most active period two years ago. The reduction results from a major reorganizational change. This involved consolidation of several departments under a single management cbncept. Aim of the reorganization is to maintain and improve - - - Hercules competitive position, he said." Mr. Sailer noted that. Mishaps Rise in Cost Cuts, Rail Economist Tells ICC OGDEN (AP) An economist testfying for rail unions Friday presented several statistical reports he said Indicate railroad accidents increase as the companies cut financial corners. The economist, Eli Oliver, represented the Railway Labor Executive Assn., Washington, D.C., at the Interstate Commerce Commission hearing here on a petition Submitted by the , Southern Pacific and Union Pa-- ; cific Railroad companies to take ! over the operation of the Ogden Union Railway and Depot Co. (OUR&D). ' Employs 415 Th OUR&D employs about 445 workers union officials fear would lose their jobs as a result of the proposed changes. The railroad companies that inspection and work done on f maintenance f, frieght trains wastes time and Impedes the railroads compet- ing with other forms of tran- spoliation. ? Mr. Oliver presented statist!- -' cal forms and charts to show the accidents Increase as railroad companies eliminate mainwork on locomotives A tenance i and freight cars. Desire Cost Cuts t The railroads desire to re-- j duee repair costs to expedite the movement of traffic, Mr. Oliver said. - Railroad attorneys called Rob-- s in erTMiller, SP charge of operations, and Wil-- I liam H. Johnston, transportation ' I con-tend- nt 4 analyst, for the rebuttal by the railway companies. The railroad officials stood fast to previous testimony that the bypass rail line as proposed would disastrous eliminate time delays. Mr. Miller previously said the reorganization plan would save the railroads $148,000 annually. Estimates Loss The proposed changeover would not adversly affect Ogden, he said. But union attorney C.C. Patterson estimated that 445 jobs would be lost and safety hampered. ICC Examiner Arthur Present said the railroad companies and the unions have 45 days in which to submit to him a written brief of their arguments. The examininer would study the briefs and recorded testimony before filing his Union Questions Shippers Acts SEATTLE (AP) The striking machinists union filed charges Friday accusing the Pacific Coast Shipbuilders Assn, with having failed to bargain in good faith for the past six weeks. The action, brought with the National Labor Relations Board, came A day after failure of mediation efforts to end the strike by 1,500 machinists against major shipyards from San Francisco to Seattle. 43-d- Intarast stock geatatlwit r Local MshaO by A Oempsty-Tagslo- C, fur- - lac.) 5 74 2 83 INVEST aROUPt 12.35 13 42 Mut 21 19 23 03 Stock Select M0.421120 7 83 8 51 Ver 4.48 6.94 Intcn KEYSTONBt 249985 47 Inv 6-- 1 Med 2 2449 26 72 Py LPr 3 17 77 19 39 4 DiS 110912.11 1 9 59 10 47 Inc Gth K2 4.20 4.78 HGr S- -l 26.46 28.82 -t-nr-6-M 35 15.64 2061 APP M 5.50 6 01 LPr InH 143915 57 Knikr 714 783 0.43 9 21 Life Inv Life Stk 434 692 Mast Gr 9821073 Maw Tr 17 3718.98 Mut Inv 10 7011 74 11 9412.92 Nat WS NAT SEC SER: 12 771396 Balan 6 55 7 16 Bond 85 5 30 Dlvid 7 55 25 Pt Stk 33 6 92 Incom Stock 8 84 966 Grwth 913 9 98 One wm 173173 18 3020 00 Opph 9 97 10 78 Puritan .
