"What a revolting situation this has become!" She is not talking about crowded hospitals, the cost of pills, or her own arthritis. She is talking about modem nursing., Nursing is a lost art, mourns this former nursing supervisor in one of Salt Lake City's hospitals. And a Salt Lake City doctor echoes her sentiments. AND OLD NURSE: The role of the registered nurse has changed tragically In the past 20 years. Nurses today are educated to the point where they are losing sight of the patient above-mentione- d Medical prog-res- s makes patient care more complex than it ever was. We arent so much maids as practicing nurses now. When the patient-say- s, "I YOUNG NURSE: feel dizzy, we are expected to know whyr We know Jnore about medicine more chemistry, biology, anatomy, and pharmacology--an- d 'I y really think the doctors place more confi-denc- e In us because of it if they would only realize. Supervisors and doctors are really wonderful about teaching us new things as we work, too. DR. AND OLD NURSE: Bedside care is delegated to nurses aides and practical nurses . . . where is the RN wheri the patient needs emergency attention or the doctor needs help with a technical procedure? YOUNG NURSE: True, we are not always right there with the patient There are so many duties taking us away from the patients bedside drawing up patients records, making lab tests, to name some. The same doctor who cant always find me will want an record on the patient at the snap of his fingers L Very definitely we haven't much time to spend with the patient It would be wonderful to have more. But with the medical advances there are, who have more medications to give, more records to keep, more technical procedures to do. Many hospitals hire ward clerks to keep all the records up to date, but that only adds to the patients bill. And nurses are scarce. There Just arent enough nurses to allow us to do things nurses used to do giving back rubs, bed baths, drawing blood, rubbing the patients head with a cold cloth. And we ENJOY doing those things. Of course, there are exceptions, but as a general rule I believe this to be true.
