Show elle elie dish FISH AND ND GAME bar bat LAW naw IN another column we ive prini print the new esy evy law for the protection of fish figh and game which is a compilation with amendments of the acts in relation to this matter which ha have e been passed by the legislature for several sessions following blowing F 0 i is a letter received concerning this law calling for a reply through throng gh the NEWS eulas march 1881 editon editor r d iton deseret jelics metes I 1 have just received the new law on fish and game rame b ame with a request accompanying it for tor me to post it up in a public place when I 1 did so it was criticised criticized by those present and some of our solons declared it to b be e inoperative because it was special le legislation isla isia wherein its proviso gives a sportsman an excursionist or any one who wishes and is able to rusticate in the mountains in july and august and camp there liberty to kill deer elk etc the poor man who lives ilves liv es there all al summer or perhaps the year 5 ear round in a house cannot lawfully kill one if he and his family are suffering for the want of some meat As we have no lawyers here andave and we hav have e ever found you to be correct in expounding the law we W e w would ouid like to g e t bour opinion on this one for w we e would not like to prosecute any one on an unconstitutional law yours respectfully NIMROD we think that the I 1 solons of karmas kammas are more captious than profound and that the term I 1 special legislation Is not properly applicable to this law sportsmen and excursionists are arc not S singled out as special f uv orites in the manner intimated by the kamas critics the exemption in the law applies to at al persons camping in the mountains who are in need of f food for the time being the object of this exemption is clear and rational it will be conceded that a law is u needed ceded for the protection of game garne particularly of the kind that is often slaughtered for the skins while the meat is wasted if people are permitted to destroy the wild animals that rt roam 1 an 1 the mountains in the wanton manner that has been common it will not take long to exterminate that kind of game and leave none either elther for sportsmen excursionists excursionist sor or the residents of the upper regions of this locality if the females of the elk deer mountain sheep and antelope species are arc shot down by wholesale in tile the breedin breeding season the mountains will soon be denuded den denuded udea of these creatures but when persons are in actual need of food and are away from any sou son source re c of supply except the game which ought to be protected from annihilation nihl lation common sense and comdon justice would say let the genera idof restriction be temporarily removed and this is what the law expresses in the exemption clause but permission to kill these animals during the prohibited season for the purpose of supplying a special need only extends to the males among them it is to be hoped that this willbe will tye iye respected b by s sportsmen ports men and other campers ze in the mou mountains stains for their own sake as well wei as for the public good and arld that in case of wilful violation ol of the law its penalties will be inflicted the provisions in regard to fishing ought to be gener generally ait alz alT known and strictly carried out there here must be no catching catchin of fish between the of march manch and and ana the loth of juul june in each year and no set line fishing lishing or use of explosive substances to destroy nishat nish fish at any season these restrictions are eminently proper and we invite our readers to learn the law hoping that infractions 0 of f it V will bo complained of aud and its penalties duly enforced |
